So I bought a Gunnar Roadie today...
I had trouble selling my AWOL and the bike shop I bought from said they would take it in trade for a Gunnar Roadie build. The build is as follows:
2005 Gunnar Roadie frame / True Temper OX Platinum / Size 580
Enve 2.0 Fork
Chris King Headset
SRAM Rival 22 Groupset
Specialized CG-R seatpost
Bontrager Saddle
Salsa Cowbell 2 bars
Salsa stem
DT Swiss RR440 / 240 hubs / DT Competition wheelset
Continental GP4000 tires
Shimano M540 pedals
Here is a not so great parking lot pic:
I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow. He took off the brown bar tape without asking me. It had kind of grown on me, so I was sad to see it go. I might try a different color at some point.
To prove a point about bike weights, the salesguy put a $5800 2016 Specialized Roubaix SL4 Pro Disc Race UDi2 size 56 bike on the scale:
Then he put my size 58 Gunnar Roadie on the scale:
Granted the Roubaix had pedals on it, but I was really surprised how close they weighed. I wonder what a size 56 Gunnar with all similar carbon goodies would weigh...
Then finally he weighed my Jamis and it was a couple pounds heavier than the Gunnar:
I was a little surprised as it weighs less than 20 lbs on my scale at home.
I took the Gunnar out for a 20 mile ride once I got back home. Using "New Bike Fitness" power, I hit a PR on a local segment on Strava that I never thought I would have beaten and it was easy as well. After that, I found a .6 mile loop where I could do some sprints on each bike. On the Jamis, I could only get it up to 22-23 mph during the ~150 yard sprint section. On the Gunnar, I was able to get over 26 mph in the sprint a number of times with one 27.1 mph peak.
I have no explanation why one is faster than the other. It makes me wonder if the hubs on the Jamis need to be rebuilt or something. Whatever the reason, the Gunnar was faster everywhere I took it. And this Rival 22 groupset is the smoothest shifting groupset I've ever ridden. The salesguy dialed it in and he said he thought it shifted better than his Red bike. I assumed he was pulling my leg, but once I got on the road with it, I was shocked at how smoothly the front and rear DRs shifted.
I'm not super fired up about the color of the bike, but he made me an offer on the build that I couldn't refuse, so I jumped on it. I guess I can always have it repainted at some point if it doesn't grow on me.

Oh also, it doesn't seem to be any more flexible than my Jamis. I'll keep trying to feel for it, but I'm not really feeling it. The sprints feel solid. I'll take it out to some 13% climbs this week and see if I can tell anything.
It definitely does not have that noodly feeling that I got with the Lynskey R240 I demo'ed.
So far the Gunnar feels a lot like every other steel bike I've ridden, just lighter and possibly smoother.

Complete side note, that empty internal routing hole on the side of the down tube on the Roubaix really rubbed me the wrong way.
Wish they could leave that out on the DI2 builds.

I just remembered the Jamis wheelset has Specialized Armadillo Elites on it versus the GP4000's on the Gunnar.
According to the tests, the GP's have some of the least rolling resistance of any tire. I assume the Specialized don't fare as well. Could that be the difference in the sprints?

Nice bike! It looks awesome. I'm sure it rides like a dream. All three of those bikes are fabulous road machines. Enjoy your Gunnar!

Haha awesome. I was wondering when we were going to see this post. Glad it feels good to ride!
As a side note about that Roubaix, a guy who I ride with owns one and he is mad about how much it weighs. Told me if he could do over he'd buy the non disc version because it weighs over a pound more than his old Roubaix, and he reckons the extra weight is all because of the disc breaks. Not sure if this is true, just relaying an anecdote!

Nice bike.personally I like the understated look.
It looks to me as if you could manage a 60 frame and ditch the spacers. Any particular reason ypu went with a 58?

It's a little creepy how much you sound like my girlfriend
It's what they had in stock. Got a silly good deal on it. Makes me wonder if a 57 Sport might not be a better fit for me.

I also saw one of those new $13,000 Venge's in the store as well. The carbon tubes on that thing were massive. I can't imagine its a lightweight carbon bike either.

Most of the high end carbon bikes(frames) won't be shooting for the lowest weight possible til something changes in the UCI it seems.

Keep in mind companies like specialized have 3+ ranges of each bike... for Roubaix, for instance, there's a basic model made out of their Fact 8r carbon, then a fancier model with 10r and then the S-works version with 11r and they do get lighter as they go up.
But then, the frame and fork barely weigh 2 lbs anymore as it is - how much lighter can you really go with just the frame? Clunky wheels can weigh 4+ lbs.
Btw, I'd ditch that seat post.

Congrats. Nice bike, and you could dress it up with an orange seat collar...
SRAM's new line is wonderful. There are haters out there, but it is great, no question.
I don't agree re 58 vs. 60. Assuming you feels comfy the way it is, a 60 would come with a longer top tube, and you're already riding a shorter stem. And I'd call BS on Thomson seat posts somehow not being reliable. I've gone over 30,000 miles on them. One of the nice features is they are scored, so they don't slip and you don't have to over tighten them. They also, IMHO, look a whole lot better.
As for the speed, were you in the drops? In the high 20s, wind resistance is a huge factor. The Gunnar appears to have a little more drop than the Jamis.

Of course, nobody can see it when you're sitting on the saddle so if you like it, leave it. I think that's just specialized's way of admitting they over did it on the latest roubaix frames.

I enjoy vicariously shopping for seatpost collars, as it's not something I need!

congrats on the bike.
The Enve fork looks great on there vs the alum one you posted couple of weeks ago.
