300+ miles club, October
No one started this one yet, so I figured why not. The goal: bicycle 300 or more miles in October.
For myself I will be shooting for 400 again, hoping to reach 500 if circumstances permit.

10/1 - 12 miles (https://connect.garmin.com/activity/118356071)
========================================================
12/400 (3%)
Originally was going to do a very hilly 40 mile ride and video the fall foliage. However the leaves haven't turned colors enough yet, so I postponed it a week.
Then I decided to do a flat 50 because it was so damned cold and windy out. Got 6 miles out and realized I forgot my pump. Also it was raining and I was miserable. So I wimped out and headed back home. Hope this does not foreshadow how my "car free week" will end up this week.

I'm game. I need to get below 200 lbs before I start running again.

Not safe for work
Since I rode 301 miles in September I think I'm ready for this club. My goal for October is 350 miles of riding fun and frolic.
So far this month I've ridden 2.5 miles.
Ok, not an impressive start but if you saw the amount of leave I have to rake up in the yard, you'd understand.

I did 200 in August and 250 last month, so 300 seems like a logical next step. Hopefully the weather will cooperate....

OK, dropping out, sorry. I rode 1. the longest I ever have at 12.8 miles, and 2. the fastest I have ever ridden at 34.4 mph. While I would love to do that every day, I think I'll start off with a smaller goal. 100-150 club here I come!

I'm in for 450mi this month... made 452 last month... so I figure since last month's goal was 310... 450 should produce something interesting. No 34mph average here though! that would be amazing.

I'm in even though my bike's in the shop now. I think there's something wrong with the bottom bracket as it's started making a nasty clicking sound. Only had the bike 7 months so this better be covered by the warranty.
Anyway, here's my mileage so far...
10/1 - 33.30
10/2 - 17.70
Total: 51.00

Ah that makes sense. Regardless, 13mph isn't bad. I started at 10mph this season, and can maintain 15 on my commute to work in just 4 months.

13 mph is about what I average on any given trip, which will include time stopped at stop lights, etc.

What a week to start off my "Car Free Week" experiment in. It's f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-f-frrreeeeeezing out folks! Woke up to the sound of pouring rain. My first thought was "screw this, I give up", thus giving up on CFW on only the third day. As the morning progressed I gained courage and put on my new long sleeve sport fleece and long pants. The shirt was 4x and too small, the pants are 3x and too big. Jeez I have a weird body. Regardless, they felt comfortable when I got out into the 45 degree rainy weather.
It was weird at first because it constricted my body more than I was accustomed to. But I got over it quickly. They kept me warm and dry and it was the most comfortable I've ever been in rain all year long. Unfortunately since the pants are a little baggy I ended up getting the right side snagged on my chainring a few times, ripping a hole in them. I may try sewing it up.
It was supposed to pour even more on the ride home, but luckily the winds shifted and blew the storm away. The downside was that I now had to ride into a headwind all the way home, thus making my entire commute today into a headwind, both ways. That's ok, I'll take that over pouring rain. To prevent the baggy pants from straying into my chainring again I got a binder clip from my office supply closet and clipped the baggy excess of my right pant leg. It worked perfectly, if a little ghetto.
Halfway home I almost got curbed by a pickup. I was going through an intersection and he was in my lane overtaking me, leaving me about a foot of clearance when we both reached the curb simultaneously. I was furious, and for the first time ever (on my bike) I gave someone the finger. I was disappointed in myself immediately afterward, because I lost my zen-like cool that I strive to attain whilst cycling. Luckily, some Hendrix popped onto my mp3 player right then, and it helped me regain my zen.
Made it home and passed the 2000 mile mark for the year. Weather is supposed to get better, so here's to 4 more days of successful commuting. Going to stop by the LBS tomorrow after work and see about getting some long fingered cycling gloves, however.
