12 miles...now what should I shoot for?
As you know, I set a new PR for me on Tuesday. I want to do another one tomorrow. If I did almost 12 miles then, what should I do when I ride tomorrow? What would you do if you were me? Im thinking 15 at a minimum and 20 as a maximum. Any suggestions?

13!
Doesn't matter how far you go. As long as you have fun. Ride 'till you think you are finished :) |
Speaking from experience, starting riding basically from scratch, I say you ought shoot for doing 12-15 miles REGULARLY.
I think that it is the consistency that you ought to be striving for. If you do 12-15 miles per day 5-6 days per week, sooner or later the distance will come, and it should come easily. |
Increase the distance to 20 miles or so (less if you're going slow, more if you're going fast) and then do it more or less every day for several years.
It isn't the distance but the effort.
To some, the goal of non-zero is plenty enough. To others, it's an incremental improvement. I'd say consistency wins, so just get out there and do another 12. See if you can get smoother or faster or something incrementally better than last time.
Maybe increase your MPH ratio, like try 12 or 13 for example.
Shoot for having a good time. Is there a nice park (or another destination you'll enjoy) just barely within bike distance?
Not that I know of.
I would say 15 would be good but it is different for everyong. Try doing 12 and see how you feel. Want more.... do more. You dont? no worries
Ten percent is (or used to be, anyway) a common goal for someone trying to bump up his mileage. So 13.2 miles?
just do what you find fun, and dont even count the miles. just ride and ride and ride. if its fun and you enjoy it then 12, 20, 30, 50, 100 miles doesnt really matter.
my goal isnt miles, its speed! so i just ride as fast as i can for 30 min then turn around and ride as fast as i can back home. thats what i enjoy trying to push myself faster each time. i enjoy it so much i accidentally giggle when i am keeping up with the flow of traffic. if we can lose weight doing something fun, then the world is whole |
I've been told that going up by 10% is a good increase at lower mileage. So go for 13-14 miles next.

15-20 would be good. I would ride 12 a few more times. Do you ride in flat or hills?
