Opinions on 29er commuter/ hybrid frames

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I realize opinions are worth what I pay for them, but I need am asking for yours. I am building a bike, and have been buying components as I can afford them. Now I have saved up $500 for a frameset. With all the frames to choose from, I am looking for what you think would be the best frame for building a 29-inch wheel commuter that may see light offroad trails as well. Prefer Disc setup (as I have one I can use) but not limited to that. So, all that being said, what are your suggestions for an under $500 frame to build a nice commuter/hybrid 29er for a 6'-1", 270 clyde? Thanks for any and all advice.

Check out the Soma Double Cross (w/ or w/out disc brake mounts), or one of Surly's offerings.

Alternately: try to find something solid on the used market (frame or complete) and either have it powdercoated/painted and built-up with your new components, or ride it as-is and upgrade as necessary.

Well, I've built up a few using this frameset: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NIB-ATB-UNBR...item2ea6c17242 or buy it from BikeIsland direct.

Cro-Moly is heavier than Al, but the steel 29er ride is superior. The owners rave about their bikes, fast on the road too - I mean chasing down roadies fast. Watch out for the size of 29ers, too big and they're pigs. Focus on the effective top tube length.

Note: These RST disc forks still have the canti bosses, so you can easily mount those inexpensive front lowrider racks; great for front panniers if it's going to be a commuter bike. A well balanced ride.

29 is 700c that needs a wash.

One of the few I'd consider is the Salsa Casseroll

https://www.bikeman.com/FM8213.html

But it can be had as a whole bike for 1200, maybe less this time of year.

Ogre? 5+ for the frameset and $1500 built, with a rigid front end..and it's army green. Otherwise, pretty cool.
