Since we have a 'fun' birthday thread, I'll let you know about my day. I'm sure it will be amusing in retrospect.

I woke up ill from having eaten something that disagreed with me the night before, and skipped church. Feeling better later in the day, I prepared to go out for a short ride. I did everything but grease myself to get into my tights and jersey. I put the bike together. I mounted, balanced, and gave the downstroke on the left. I then discovered my right shoe was too lose. My foot went up and the shoe stayed on the ground. I realized what happened before I put my foot on my BMX pedals, but it didn't bode well for the ride start.

Once I was shod, I started again. I got a little bit and noticed the front brake was dragging. After standing around in the cold I got the front wheel spinning better, but not as it should. I was fed up and pushed on. I neglected to put my gloves back on after adjusting the brake, so I had to stop again to put my gloves on my frozen hands.

By now I was in a foul temper. Since it was cold, the bike wasn't well, and I had a headwind I called it quits at three miles. Not helping my mood was the fact I'm not in good riding shape anyway. So I pulled in the driveway, walked the bike into the garage, and went inside.

This is when I discovered that I'd stepped in some animal's leaving.... so now picture the overfed me, poured into tights and a jersey, hopping around in the yard with one shoe off looking for a stick so I could clean out the tread on the other shoe.

And all this for three miles. Happy birthday to me.

Think how much exercise you got in only three miles! And any day you can still get out there is a gift. Have a great birthday, Neil!

I hope you have a happy day the day after your birthday~!

Look at the bright side? You actually can hop on one leg? There is no way I could do that. No how.

On another note - will you be taking a laptop with you to the hospital? Does it by chance have a camera? If so we could webchat when you're awake and can't sleep??

I was hopping on the left leg, the straighter and stronger of the two.

I plan on having a laptop with me, although no webcam.

Neil -

You get a "bye" on this one...log it as "10 miles" because that's how much physical effort you expended with the wheel and the shoe and the gloves and the hopping!

Hope the rest of your day was better...but it would almost have to have been.

Happy belated birthday my friend!

-Doug

I had a lovely dinner with friends at the Old Village Inn and Tavern in Morgantown. I broke my rule never to have crab north of the Mason-Dixon line, but didn't suffer, as the food was wonderful. Only drawback was that we left just as the game between the Broncos and Steelers went into overtime. Had I paused 11 seconds before leaving we could have seen the miracle live..... :-)
