Weekly Inspiration Network: WIN #1, Jan 9 - Jan 15

Welcome to the Weekly Inspiration Network!

Since many of us do a better job of sticking to our goals if we have a little public accountability, here's a way to get some support for your efforts towards a healthier you.

If this is your first time posting, let us know what is is you're trying to do, where you are now, and what your goal is. You might be trying to lose weight, or exercise more regularly, or home-cook more meals, or even spend more quality time with your family.

Then every week, let us know how you did the week before.

We'll read each others posts & cheer each other on.

Oh, and if Monday comes around and no one has started the new thread for the week yet -- feel free to copy this post, change the numbers and dates in the title, and get things started. Thanks!

I lost a bunch of weight, and I'm starting to gain some back, and I'm not really happy about that. I noticed that I exercise more consistently and eat better when I participate on BF more often. I'd like to get down to 175 this year; and I'd like to be a stronger cyclist, better at hill-climbing.

Lifetime high: 255 lbs, September 2009
Recent best: 182 lbs, May 2011
Jan 9th: 192.4 lbs

When I first found BikeForums at the beginning of last October, I was about 210 lbs. By mid-November, I was up to 217. By January 2nd, I was up to 227.5, within 8 lbs of my lifetime high (which I hit for a very short time back in 1976). In the last three years, I've been on a total see-saw, weight-wise, oscillating within a 50 lb range.

Along with the last burst of weight gain, I've started to suffer from pains in my feet and other joints, shortness of breath, lack of energy - I was on a self-destruction diet, compulsively eating thousands of calories of junk food every day.

I've been planning an approach to health and weight since mid-December, with the objective of starting on January 2nd. The program is more "one day at a time", oriented, focusing on the process rather than on results. (The result-orientation has been a trap for me, where I lose interest in dieting once the scale stops moving.)

Anyway, I've lost 5 lbs in the first week, but the main thing is that, by changing the way that I eat, I already feel a lot better - the pains in the joints are gone, I feel like I have more energy and focus, feel more in control of my own behavior, I don't get as winded on short rides. Let's hope it lasts...

The goal is to get somewhere around 165, which will put me at the border between normal and overweight for my height according to the BMI charts, and to HOLD it there.

I rode a lot 20 years ago. Lived the cycling lifestyle with 13 or more bikes at any given time. Even then, weighed 220 or so. I retired from the Navy 10.5 years ago and ballooned in 2 years. Played the diet/weight game. Had my left knee replaced in Nov, 2011, decided to work at getting back in shape and not be too worried about weight. Day of that surgery, I weighed 303. Recovery went well and I was back on the bike. Even some running. August 21st, I weighed 293 again. And crashed my bike while descending a twisty canyon road. I broke my neck, my bike and some ribs. And other injuries. I'm fused T7-12. I'm recovering well. I'm improving time on the stationary recumbent bikes, and toleate 10-15 minutes on my own bike on a trainer at home. Upside to all of this, is, a new appreciation for almost everything. And, my blood pressure is down as is my weight. I'm back in the gym again even. With my Physical Therapist's approval and recommendations. And limitations.

Lifetime high: 315 lbs, Spring 2003 (Might have been higher though prior to that realization)
Recent best: 256 lbs, Dec 2011
Jan 9th: 259 lbs

All time high - 304, about 5 or 6 years ago.

01/07/12 - 207.5

I can't believe I was at or barely under 190 last year. Somewhere around September the wheels fell off somehow. I think it was two-fold: I'd been fueling for performance throughout the summer instead of focusing on weight loss as my primary goal, and ended up consuming too many calories all told, especially when the races/rides stopped happening; and I'd been eating a ton of stuff in reaction to a whole lot of job-related stress through the fall.

But it's OK - I'm getting the priorities re-aligned (they're due back from the shop this afternoon ;) ), and I'm starting to turn the train around. At least I'm still able to run a couple of miles at a time pretty easily, so I know I'm in better shape than I was this time last year.

Its been a roller coaster for me the last about a year..

Highest weight 534 pounds (late 2007)
Got down to 305 pounds (May 2010)
Last Friday I was 372 pounds.....

I am back into whole foods and riding my trainer and have set some goals for myself for this year, I will share the results here or if anyone is interested the link to my blogs are in my sig ;)

All time high 270 last June. This morning 196 heading to, hopefully, 170. That would put me at a BMI of 25 and change.
Doubt I can get to a BMI of 24.9 or less *AND* maintain it but I will try.
I haven't seen that weight in 34 years!

Calculator I was using says 'normal weight' is 122 - 164 for a 5'8" person.
122lbs is 'normal' weight? Really? Somebody has got to be kidding.

markm109 01-09-12 01:38 PM

Weight this morning is 260. I was down to 244 in September. My goal is 190. I converted to Vegan almost 4 years ago and got down to 220 at one point then started eating too much "concentrated" calories, wheat products mainly. They make good soy (tofu) substitutes for everything these days. And sweets - many are vegan. I am a diabetic so sweets are my downfall - you wouldn't believe the cravings...

My goals are to eat out less - I eat out at lunch almost every day at either Qdoba, Chipolte or Pei Wei.
Follow the Eat to Live plan which eliminates processed foods (wheat and sweets).
Ride more and build up long distance endurance to complete a century this year. (1500 miles last year)

So far this year I have only achieved ride more - 4 times in 8 days. This morning my spouse was reading an article and seemed to get into the whole weight loss mode. She has not been in that mode for many years which makes it hard when there are foods in the house that I am not supposed to have. At least she converted to Vegan when I did 4 years ago otherwise I would have most likely failed at that too.

So my goal this week is to get her buy in to a program (hopefully Eat to Live) and clean out the kitchen of foods that are not on our diet and get into eating healthy and weight loss by the end of the week. She works late most days so I could clean out the kitchen before she gets home - otherwise she would not allow me to toss perfectly good food. She was out of town when I converted to Vegan - LOL.

My goal is to spend more time in the mountains, especially hiking. To that end, yesterday I covered eight snowy mountain miles, and probably a little more than 2,000 vertical feet. Sadly, I lost my wool neck gaiter, which was my very favorite hat. It fit well, was the perfect amount of warmth, and all that. Climbing back up toward the pass from the lake, I took it off and put it in a back pocket. Later, I didn't have it. :(

I want to camp on the Sahale Arm above Cascade Pass this summer, and do some camping by kayak on Ross and/or Diablo lakes. I'd really like to hike in to Azure Lake in Terror Basin, but I don't know if that will happen this year. I'll probably be able to summit Mount Baker ( 10,775 ft and heavily glaciated ) and find that pretty exciting.

The standard charts and graphs tell me that at 5'-10" I could weigh as little as 130 or so and still be considered "normal." If I weighed anything close to that, I'd look like I'd just been liberated from Buchenwald. I set my personal goal of 165 with my doctor's help, and even though I have serious reservations about the feasibility of reaching it, he says that would put me at the high end of acceptable weights for me.

Exactly! My doc wanted me to be <200 the next time I saw him which is this April. The last time he saw me I was 215. Hopefully I can continue the loss and be ~170 by April which would make 100 lbs lost in 11 months.

goldfinch 01-09-12 03:16 PM

I weighed 108.2 a few days ago. The is 50 pounds down from my highest measured weight and represents nearly a 1/3 drop in total weight. My goal weight was 110 and I am fluctuating around that number. I fear the roller coaster. My goal for the next week is to stay no more than my goal weight.

My second goal is to actually use my clipless pedal. I put them back on my bike today. I fear the clipless, but not like I fear the rollercoaster.

TrojanHorse 01-09-12 04:30 PM

I'm 6'2 and those BMI charts tell me to weigh 144? on up to 194. I'd be a medical cadaver at 144 but I'd be really happy at 194. I'm currently at 241 and not liking it. I believe that's my lifetime max but it's not the first time I've been here.

This year's goal = record what I eat daily
Be active 7 days a week (at least 30 min. per day)
Ride at least 100 miles per month, which should be easy if I do the next one
Ride a century this fall.

I had a nice 30 mile ride yesterday, which is the furthest I've ridden in about 18 months...

Juan Foote 01-09-12 04:52 PM

I had (re) started cycling as a result of massive weight gain during my healing process. I went up over 300# afterward and knew I had to do something about it. I have gotten myself down to the 210-220# range and know that it's going to take some serious changes and determination to make it under 200# and to my goal of around 180, where I haven't been in well around 15 years. I have since decided that I am not going to concentrate on weight loss so much as just going out, making miles, and enjoying myself.

zjrog 01-09-12 05:39 PM

At 6'3" they think I could be in the 150s to 200 even... 200 would be nice though. I'm aiming for 220-230 right now. Seems more attainable now at less than 260, than it did at 290.

Hill-Pumper 01-10-12 10:50 AM

I am in a different situation then most here. I have lost the vast majority of the weight that I need, but need to finish it off now. I weighed 220+ in June of 2008 and now at 188 as of last night. I have been on a roller coaster most winters, but have maintained under 200 pounds for almost two years now. I want to get my body fat in the 16 percent range which should put me somewhere in the 170's.

SmokedDeathDog 01-10-12 05:49 PM

Here are my goals for the year.

1. I would like to get into the 220's this year for weight. At my largest (Oct 2011) I was over 300. I have about 40 lbs to go to reach this target. Once I am there and comfortable (i.e. I can keep it off) I will then look at how much lower I can go. I got there once about 10 years ago and I that was close to perfect for my body type. I don't know if I will have as much muscle this time (not that I have a bunch).

2. I would like to do the Seattle to Portland ride this year in July, 200 miles in 2 days. It is a flat ride so easier than the Livestrong ride I did that year as well. I did this 3 years ago, so I know that I can do it. At that time I did not have a full time job so I had much more time to train. This year my wife said that she would do it with me. I just signed us up for it today!

3. I would like to do the Seattle to Vancouver ride this year in August. This ride has a ton more hills, so my weight will matter much, much more.

4. I would like to do a total of 4 organized rides this year that are 100K or more.

I didn't know there was a Seattle to Vancouver ride...

SmokedDeathDog 01-16-12 09:17 AM

I just found out about it the other day. A friend of ours wants us to do it with them this year. I guess it is a very popular ride and fills up quick. Since registration is an issue, they have a lottery system of who can attend. It is put on by the same people that do Seattle to Portland. Here is the link. http://shop.cascade.org/content/events/rsvp

Seattle Forrest 01-16-12 10:03 AM

I didn't know about the Seattle to Vancouver (I assume that's the V in BC) as an organized ride, either.
