Back for round 3
I was on here about 4 or 5 years ago (amazing it has been that long) started riding, my left foot got screwed up quit, started again, foot screwed up again.. quit sold bike and trainer and the whole nine yards. Never found the root cause but after I stopped riding the pain eventually went away.
Now at 51 and 50 lbs over weight I thought time to give it another shot. I bought a cheap excersie bike and have been hitting it 4 time a week, taking it easy not to screw my foot or knee up and am now looking at bike.
Of course I have more questions now than when I went in to the LBS... comfort, cyclocross, mtb, hybrid... road.... I feel like Robin Williams on Moscow on the Hudson when he was trying to buy coffee.
My wife says I dont need a bike, we have enough clothes hangers already....
I like the looks of the specilized sirrus or the trek FX.. as soon as the weather is a little nicer I will go and do some test rides....

Welcome back. The foot thing is odd. Maybe it would make sense to work with a fitter when getting a new bike to see if there is something in your positioning that can cause foot pain.

quick question , is it foot or ankle ?
Just asking as my partners ankle hurts when she rides but she has had 3 lots of surgery on it just to walk . Doctor just told her to strap it and stay int he saddle to keep the weight on her ass not her foot.

Welcome BACK to the machine...
I would agree with goldfinch, and go one step further. If you had problems with your foot, and it went away, get a fitting. If it starts to come back after you get a fitting, and are riding, see a doctor ASAP. I might even have it checked out before I buy the bike, or even get a fitting.

I was fit for shoes at the LBS with my bike at the store.... now (4 years later), riding a trainer with regular pedals and tennis shoes I have no discomfort..
hindsight being 20 - 20, after a few discussions with people it points to this... https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/metatarsalgia
I have wide feet and finding bike shoes that are 3 to 4 e and not 200 bucks was a challange 4 years ago.
