First I would tear it down and do a comprehensive rebuild to get it running nice and smooth, e.g new barrings, new chain, re-lube everything, etc. Once it is running smoothly, I would find whatever parts I wanted and put it together.* I would then disassemble it again, and paint it a high gloss light silver.

*List of parts I would buy:

• New chain
• Road slicks
• Nashbar carbon fork
• Nashbar crank set

I recommend a set of Suntour Barcons. They are excellent friction bar-end shifters. You can pick them up on Craigslist, ebay, swap meets, etc.

I've put a set on a mid-90s hybrid and even though they are friction shifters, with the rest of the bike set up for indexed, the shifting is very clean.

I also put a pair on an older friction-shifted road bike and when I put on a ramped freewheel (i.e., one for indexed shifting), it also shifts very well.

As for details ... stock rims and spokes, cleaned and polished, new meats ... Kenda Small Block Eights

Retrospect 44T crank, in white.
Black, Nashbar seat post
White Bontrager saddle which was on my roadie but has since been replaced.
Rattle can flat black paint
Stock Rock Shox Judy forks for now

The plan is to go 1X7, so I've got to reinstall the RD, cables for both front and back brakes and new brake pads all around. Also have new grips to install as well as white, platform pedals

Hopefully she'll be back in ride trim by the end of the weekend.

I bought a worn out 6500 and built a 29er hybrid conversion. It has economy Alex 700C wheelset,Shimano 48-36-26 cranks, and 8-speed drive train. It is the perfect bike for running errands and just-riding-around with the kids.

The build looks great, rattled can mine as well, works perfect. I think the fork should be painted on yours or at least take stickers off it.

It's funny you say that ... I was thinking the fork needs something too. I think I'll probably start with just taking the stickers off, and see how it goes.

Was too busy this past weekend to finish it ... and went riding after work last night on my roadie rather than fix it LOL

Yeah, the sticker is going to go ... and if the unstickered fork looks weird (It's a creamish color, not white, and I was going for a black and white thing), then I'll sand the fork and paint it ... probably black in all honesty.

Issues on my build ... glad you asked. After I disassembled, and then reassembled, I goofed something up putting the fork back on, and there's a lot of play in the headset, which is stock. So I think I'm going to replace the headset (which will facilitate the painting of the shock too).

I also noticed, there's a lot of "wobble" in my front wheel. Meaning, when I put it back on the bike, and tightened the skewer, there's some play, side to side, in the wheel. I'm wondering why that is, but haven't had the time to look into further. Any thoughts from anyone?

Lastly, I think I'm going to have my LBS do the new cables. I'm not sure I have the patience or skills to do that.

So ... she's done, for now

Went with a Cane Creek headset and that tightened everything up front very nicely.

Going to leave the fork as is for now.

Having an issue with chain suck and the chain dropping off the crank, so I'm looking at different solutions. It dropped once in the shop apparently and scratched up the paint on the bottom of the frame, so I'm going to have to fix that soon.

All in all, pretty pleased with it. It'll be a nice around town cruiser that'll handle the bike paths around here too. Not sure I'd go trail riding with it in this configuration, but I'm pretty pleased with it overall.

this thread has been great. i have that 97 6500. my rear shifting is shot otherwise still in great shape.

been debating on how to bring it back to life. 1x7, singlespeed, replace current shifters, put drops on it?

if a clean, older MTB that had 80+mm suspension fell in my lap AND fit me decently well... I'd toss the suspension fork, and turn it into a 69er... might even consider turning it into a SS if the local trails (and my fitness lvl) allowed...
