If you scadoodle up on that map a little bit , you will see Boulder Springs (across from the equestrian center). Make a left onto that street for parking. I make my left then drive up about 50 yards to a section not parked directly in front of a home.
This is a very popular parking space for riders.
Also a bit further up the road is a big dirt lot on the left. We park there a lot to avoid the short steep section one must climb to start GMR. It can be a BIG demotivator.
I usually choose my start point by how clean my truck is ha ha!

The short hill before GMR is what we like to call a "warm up"... you hit the first switchbacks pretty early on GMR.
Somebody bring a cattle prod for Joe. Not for Joe, per se, but FOR Joe if you can appreciate the difference.
We still need a time - Joe, it'll take you a while to get there and I think Commute Commando's Commute will probably be the determining factor.

Ah time, IME if you start at 7 am on a hot day it seems to be ok as there should be some shade form the sun rising in the east and we are on the west side after a couple miles.
6 would be cooler maybe. We never start at 6 but will do for special events.
But IMO 6 am for those travelers will be tough to meet ride time.
As far as myself, I'll start at noon if need be.

I'm up daily at 4:00, so being there by 6 is no prob. My bike lives in the back of my car.
EDIT
Just GoogleMapped it and it's 87 miles to Sierra Madre Blvd, so 1 1/2 hr drive is a conservative estimate. That early on a Sunday, it's more like a little over an hour. I might park as far down as Foothill and ride up to meet the group. I'm a wimp when it comes to warming up on a hill.

Saturday shows 90 degrees for Glendora.

So, I'll bring the parka and be prepared for snow. I don't hold much faith in 10 day forecasts!

It's been gloriously overcast in the mornings lately... my kingdom for that kind of weather on Aug 5th! Those temps are the high, of course... shouldn't be anywhere near that at the hour we're riding.
So what's the start time - 7 am? 6 am would be painful. It's only an hour and a bit up the hill anyway.
CC - you can park where everybody else is parking and just ride down and back foothill to warm up depending on how early you get there.

Roll at 7am? I'm good with that. I'm 55 miles out, so that's no big deal.
Besides, it's right down the street from "Club Med" (City of Hope). Maybe I'll stop by after and say hey to the nurses. They all miss me!

I just edited Beachgrad's initial post so all the details of the ride are the very first post in the thread.

I know, I'm tempted to do that one too because I've never gone to the village.

I wouldn't be able to to the 28th anyway as my club is doing a PV ride with hills.

I'm still tempted. Due to some unfortunate vacation and business trip circumstances, my July has been a wreck. I did a hilly ride today and I was not soaring up the hills like I wanted to, let's just put it that way.
You folks have been riding hills, right?

What is the estimated pace for this going to be? I would love to go but would hate to be the uber clyde anchor holding the clyde boat down.

Knocked out my first century today. Didn't plan the ride as my century but it just felt right so i kept going. Still had the cramping around 60 miles but rode thru it. Gonna have to figure that out.

Knocked out 27 miles today of hell. @3000 ft of elevation with several sections of 14+% grade.

Plan on routing and riding an unsupported century in the next couple weekends is weather and family permits.

And I'm assuming you've never done GMR. I'm adding you to the list with a (R)ookie tag. Let me know if I need to change anything.
For those that don't know the breakdown, here it is form the SoCal forum:
You got the order correct. From the bottom of GMR it goes Shack, then Village, then Lifts.
1) GMR yellow access "gate to the shack" is about 8 mi @ 5% grade. Nice consistent climb, not easy, not hard. It's just right. 6/10 difficulty. Expect it to take 60 minutes for an average rider.
2) From the "shack to the village" along Glendora Ridge Road (for GRR don't take the left at the T intersection shortly after the shack) is about 12 mi @ 2% average grade, but that low avg grade is because there's a lot of up and down. Plenty of it is 5-6% uphill. The 12 miles have lots of stretches to take it easy on flat or downhill sections and is the easiest section of the ride. 4/10 difficulty, maybe higher if you are easily fatigued from your climb to the shack. This is another 60-70 minutes for the average rider, making the ride time to the village around 2 hours to 2 hours 20 minutes with no stops.
3) From the "village to the lifts" is the hardest section. 5 mi @ 8-9% average grade, moments of 14% or so. This will take 50-70 minutes for an average rider, depending on how many times they throw up. 9/10 difficulty.
PS, all this info is browseable for free on Strava.
