Oh hill, where is thy victory. O hill...

where is thy sting.

so Ive got to tell you the story of this hill that I will show you at the end. It is the only real hill around me. it is short, but hits 10% grade near the top

the first time I attempted it, I got bested and had to walk up it.
second time, I got bested again and had to walk it. This hill was playing with me.

keep in mind, Im a hefty 290 lbs.

ever since then its been a battle between me and this hill on who will claim domination. the third time I did it, I actually made it up without walking and I was so proud of my self I said lets do it again, and maybe better than 5 mph this time. So I coasted down and tried it again, and made it up. so I said, lets do it a third time.

that was a mistake. I couldnt make it up the third time and close to the end I must have blacked out or something because next thing I know I was tipping over and then on the ground... that was the best fall ever because I just lay there for about a minute catching my breath and coming to, glad to be in one piece and alive.

FAST FORWARD 9 weeks and I think I can safely say I have won this battle!!! and will win this WAR!!!
I wont stop attacking this hill EVERY ride until Im the fastest up it.

check out my time. I am "BIG O" on strava.

Allez! Allez! Allez! BigO!

Way to go. Second place doesn't look out of reach. But, first? Bettering the great Shelby may take a while. Keep it up.

I hear ya - here's the nasty hill near me that I treat the same way (no repeats though)

https://app.strava.com/segments/831780

It's funny though - I FINALLY got a new PR on that hill in August after trying all summer to best my May time. Huff and puff all the way up and think, this has GOT to be the best. No.

This feature (where you can see all your own results in a list) is definitely one of the best features of strava.

what is your position?

That's exactly how to go at it: Keep riding it until it seems like a speedbump.

My commute has a couple of grinding 1mi+ hills at 7% grade or steeper, and on the way to work I finish my 15 miles with either the shallow road (0.5mi at 4 - 9%) or the steep side (0.25mi at 11 - 15%). Took me a while to conquer the steep side with a full commuting load on the bike.

thanks big fred and photojoe.

i would to be second soon but it might be short lived as the climb gets more attention. shelby is a member of the carrollton cycling club and he might tell them. spme of those guys are silly quick. he set the record after riding more than 50 miles that day.

Nobody said you had to play it straight!

I think I'm 41 out of 81 and no, it doesn't really get to 24%. It's consistently 7 or 8% and it kicks up to 9 and 10 % for a while. It definitely gets my heart going!

I still stink at hills but as Clifton correctly points out, the only way to get better at hills is to do them. My own STREET used to kill me and in fact, kept me off the bike for 6 years, but now I cruise up it.

i found a route today that will definitely improve my hill climbing. not far from my place but plenty of rolling hills. im still trying to decide which i dislike more- wind or hills.

anyhow, i have an update - I rode it again at the END of a 32 mile ride, and i increased my pace to 15.5 mph from 14.4. i had my chain slip off the rear derailleur costing me valuable seconds. i think i can do it in the 16.6 mph range

but the bugger is, I saw "the great Shelby watson" on this ride. as i was coming back down, the bugger was beginning his climb. the dude is probably 6' 3", 170lbs, 6 percent body fat. he not only reset his record by over 2mph, but it looked like he was on a sunday stroll. like he was hardly trying.

anyhow, im happy with my results, and i will keep climbing hills till i get it down.
