I keep pouring money into my CAAD 10 and not riding it (done a couple ugprades). Problem is, it's a 63cm. I don't really know what to do or how much to expect out of it.

I just don't like riding a road bike. the ground isn't nice enough here, I still hate the brakes (even after upgrading to ultegra, which are much better, but still suck) and there really isn't a casual group that rides on the weekends, so I have no one to ride with. Loops around my town are so tedious.

So basically, I have a bunch of money sitting in my living room that doesn't do anything for me that my 10 year old hybrid doesn't do.

Do you guys use craigslist? Is there such a thing as consignment with a bike shop?

First give it a bath and polish it up. I send a lot of time shopping on CL but don't over look ebay .

Do you still have the stock parts? If so your going to get more by parting out then selling as a whole. Yah craigslist or ebay. What do you have done to it?

If it were mine, I'd probably put the original components back on, sell the "upgrade" parts separately, and put the bike on ebay. That would probably maximize your $. I'd also list it on CL, but not really expect much unless you've really got it priced low.



Also: Take really good pictures of the drive-side of the bike. Real buyers will like that. If your handlebar tape/grip is not perfect, put some new tape on there. It's the best $10 you can spend on a bike that's being sold. Clean any gunk out of the gears.

Somebody out there is looking for a nicely priced bike in good shape - if you sell on Craigs List do NOT meet them at your house. Meet somewhere neutral, and if they want a test ride (and why wouldn't they) make sure they leave collateral that's not a fake ID or keys to a different car. I'd say cash for the full purchase price is good collateral

Good pictures reduce uncertainty. They will help it sell better/faster. Make sure they are clear and show detail. Point out any blemishes, dings, problems too.

I would list on Craig's List. List on ebay too. If it not expected to sell for >$500, then consider listing as local pick up only on ebay. Shipping a bike is expensive and that will only cut into your profit.

I have had items on ebay with clear, good-quality photos sell well above identical items with crappy pictures.

Thanks guys. The bike has like 200 miles on it. I put on ultegra brakes, cassette, nice pedals and computer and such.

I'm sure the ultegra brakes are allot better then stock, but if they still suck, I'm thinking its the pads or braking surface on the rims that are causing the poor performance. Also try to toe in the pads in using a credit card as a shim. Also note that the brakes will not stop like a MTB or anything with disc brakes.


I suggest taking it for a few rides before you really sell it. I mean there was a reason you bought it in the first place....why lose money if you don't HAVE to sell it.

It just doesn't stop with the confidence that my hybrid does. It pretty much didn't stop at all with the stock tektro brakes LOL.

I bought it because the handling was so much nicer, and I thought I'd get into group rides.

you know there's a marketplace on here, right? At the very least cross-list it here. This thread will draw attention in and of itself, and if you pay to list it here mods should be fine with it.

When you put your ultegra brakes on, did you use the same brake pads or get new ones? You can certainly try new ones for cheap (Kool Stop Salmons or swiss stops would be good to try)

If it's just the braking, i'd fix that. Your actual brakes should be good now that you've upgraded.

When you brake, how close to the bars do the levers get? can you put enough leverage on the brake to skid the rear fairly easily? I think I could go over the handlebars on my bike if I brake too hard in front, or at least that's the feeling I get. i'd be surprised if your bike can't do at least that well.

Are the wheels true? Do the brakes "pulse" when braking? How close to the rim are the brake pads?

I originally had tektros, and put salmon pads on, which made it POSSIBLE to stop the bike. Then i swapped to ultegra using the ultegra pads, and it stops OK.


Wheels are true. Pads are about the side-of-a-penny's-width from the rim and very even (thanks to my OCD)
if i crank down with inhuman strength, I can get near to skidding wheels.


by comparison, its really easy to modulate the brakes and stop the wheels on my hybrid.

Something is wrong. I am your weight on long-reach Ultegra level brakes, on a steel road bike. If I pull too hard without paying attention the bike will buck me off due to the strength of the brakes. Panic stop from 20 mph takes less than 10 feet in the dry.

Huh. I have 105 levers, ultegra brakes.

Hands on hoods, a stop from 20mph takes me around... probably 25 feet. I haven't measured it. Feels like 25.

I have above average grip strength, too.

Yeah, something is off. Could be braking surface (anything on them? did you just lube nipples and get tri-flow on the braking surface?), pads, brakes themselves (unlikely), cables, including friction and routing, or levers (unlikely).

I'd take it by the LBS, or have a friend with a road bike ride it.

I have two bikes with ultegra brakes, one has force hoods and one Ultegra. On both I have to shift my weight backwards in a panic stop to counterweight the force of the brakes. Cannondales are good bikes -- can't imagine there's anything wrong with how they set it up.

You might be surprised how well it sells (or not). I'm a taller guy and I have a helluva time trying to find bikes tall enough to fit me on craigslist. There's probably someone like me in your city. On the other hand, I'm cheap, so I don't tend to look at nicer newer bikes as I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford them.

More than 1 wheelset. Maybe I just don't know how to properly brake a road bike from the hoods. Stranger things have happened. I'd be happy if it was as good as whatever kind of v-brakes are on my hybrid. but whateves

This ^ bears repeating.

I have a full Ultegra groupset on my bike. If I grab a fistful of brakes at 20 mph without thinking, the bike will throw me like a horse. They're "stoppy" enough to throw me over the bars, or to skid the rear wheel if I grab that one. Methinks something is mechanically wrong.

Also, I don't do group rides, but I take my bike into interesting new places that make me happy, and I wouldn't trade that for all the group rides in the world. I'm guessing you don't do these on your hybrid?
