Wow, Having a Wife that Rides Can Be Rough
I'm not sure what it is but Gina just keeps wanting a new tandem. She pushes me to get new bikes but I don't need them and really, I don't want them. Like a 29'er, I'm happy with my 26'er. I don't MRB enough to warrant a new one. Besides, looking at the prices of a decent a 29'er with LX/XT like I have on my MTB, would cost more than what I would want to pay for something I don't really want.
The tandem, she really like the Cannondale tandem that she saw when we ran into a forum member and his wife on the trail. She go this itch for a new tandem. She asked if I want one. Umm, not really, our tandem runs great. If anything, I would say the handlebars would be more comfortable if they were wider. But for a few bucks, I could take care of that if it really meant that much. I asked her why she wants a new tandem and she says, well I like tandems and we could use better brakes.
I told her to buy one if she wants but if I got excited about it, I wouldn't want her to think I talked her into it! She said well I want one but only if you promise to ride it. ...Yeah, blame it on me already!
Don't be surprised if you see us on a new tandem soon. She's had the itch for a few months and it won't go away. I'm telling you now cause watch, she's going to blame it on me eventhough I can without.
These cycling wives ar crazy!

So your wife is a rough rider? Did I read that wrong?
I'm the opposite... my wife sneezes and I order new bike stuff for her. Quoth she: "No, don't buy me any bike stuff, I need to ride more"
Erm, ok. So ride more.

I'm envious. My wife looks at my bikes then lectures me on how expensive they are and how irresponsible it is to spend $200 of the $5000 a month I bring in. Its not like I do anything else. Your wife is just the way she needs to be.

This a fantasy, right? Everybody's dream, having a wife who prods you to get new bikes? Lemme guess, the trails in your town run downhill both ways.

beanzy,
I want to help you, I dont want you to suffer needlessly.
Please ask Gina to sit down with you at the computer, and click this.. https://www.calfeedesign.com/products/dragonfly/
then click the tandem box over to the right.
Then configure the bike to your hearts content.
This should cure her.

Oh well, it could be worse. We've been talked into a pair of folding bikes for future touring, and now a pair of high-wheel recumbents.

My wife pushed me to get my current ride. I can get exercise on the MTB. But now I'm glad she did!

I feel for you man...
So; Far be it for me to think that I can figure out what the fairer half of the population is really thinking or why or what it might really mean... I used to think so, but have learned otherwise.
I do think you are correct in that your other half seems to have an itch that is perceived to be un-scratched.
Would suggest that a surprise long weeked booking at a quiet B&B with no cell phones and no computers and no TV might be a start in the right direction.
No implying any current shortfalls.... but the B&B might be helpful eitherway and would be a lot less money than a new tandem that you don't seem to need or don't think you need yet....

I have a girlfriend who rides and who has no interest in a tandem or anything other than her IF, LHT and Fuji fixie. Guess I have it good.

My wife used to ride with me all the time until she started having some shoulder issues. Now she believes she can't adequately support her upper body, regardless of what kind of bike or how dialed in a pro fit she might get with it. Then one day as we were walking on the local MUP, we came across a couple on a RANS Screamer recumbent tandem. She must have talked to them for 15 minutes about their bike and their riding. She was definitely interested.
So in July, while we were visiting her mother in State College, PA, she insisted we stop by RBR to talk to them about recumbent tandems, to learn a little more about them, maybe test ride one or two and see if that might be something for us. Having never even ridden a standard tandem, nor a single-rider recumbent, I had my doubts about starting out with a bike that combined both. But as it turned out, before we could even talk about those bikes, the tadpole trikes caught her eye, as something that would solve all of her issues, without having to rely on me participating. Suddenly she saw herself running errands to the grocery store, library and farmers' market on the thing, besides the usual recreational rides.
The thing that really surprised me about this is that she is one frugal lady, and these trikes are not inexpensive. The fact that she's probably going to buy one makes me think she misses riding a whole lot more than I would have ever guessed. Good for her, I say. Plus the trikes are incredible fun, and I plan to ride it as much as she'll let me, and maybe even try to budget for one for myself next year.
