Wheel Set Opinions - Campy Neutron Ultra v White Industries T11 to Open PRO 220lb
Yo guys, doing a build up of a Fondriest X Status - Blue, Dedacciai 16.5 Steel with Campy Athena Silver Grouppo and want some opinions on wheelsets. I have them narrowed down to the Campy Neutron Ultra (via Ribble/Shiny Bike) roughly $650 or the White Industries T11 silver hub to Silver Mavic Open Pro's via Velo-Mine for $590 - The white industries were going to be my first option due to several reasons - Review, Made in USA, Service Ease, Look (silver wheelset w/blue & Chrome frame/Alu Thompson Elite/Athena Silver) but Neutron Ultra's for $70 more might be too good of a deal to pass up. This is for weekend warrior rides, club rides, somewhat ****ty city streets of Seattle on a 220 pound rider who likes to mash on the pedals from time to time.
The THIRD option I have is to get a set of new Campy Record hubs and have the LBS lace them up to a DT Swiss/Mavic Rim....
Anyone that has some time on either of these wheelsets that would like to chime in I would appreciate it. For what its worth my LBS says that campy makes the best wheels hands down and are bombproof. Not sure if the same performance/durability can be said of the T11 to Open Pro's.
Thanks!

allot better rims looking out there then open pros for the same $$ to justify getting white I hubs. Look up Velocity A23s. They are wider profiles then the standard 19mm rims, this allows the tire to open up more volume and ride/corner comfy as hell. Darn near tubular good type of feeling. Great for F'd up roads w/ cracks and/or chip n seal roads. I've ridden them w/ CK hubs and wish they were mine, and didn't have to give them back to my friend.
Prowheelbuilder.com can get those White I hubs, A23s and sapim CX ray spokes 32/32hole for $606 + shipping.

Anything from DT Swiss is better. For a 220-lb rider, RR585s are heavy but totally bombproof.

I've seen lots of people reporting problems with the Mavic Open Pros over the last few years. Not sure I'd want to take a chance on them myself...

I'm looking at black Deep Vs with blue Chris King hubs, but I have no idea how much the CK sound might drive me nuts.

I had an old pair of OP's that I was very happy with. But, it sounds at though they quality has dropped in recent years.
There's nothing about the campy wheels that made me go, "ooooo".
Subsequently, I would opt toward the WI, CK or campy hubs laced to a silver (for asthetics) 23mm rim.

Yeh, well, to those of us accustomed to the realative silence of shimano freehubs, any noise is lots of noise.

If you're going all Italian, get some ambrosio rims on whatever hub you want. Just because.

you don't have to be a racer to benifit from the extra stiffness the CX rays offer over double butted spokes or even straight gauge. And with their package deals the CXrays are only $45 more then DT swiss Comps. $3.20 per spoke vs $1 per spoke at only $45 difference when talking 64 spokes. My common sense would say to get the more aero and stiffer spokes for that price when your in it $560 already

So anyone have experience with the Kinlin XR300 rim in comparison to the A23's? Price wise they are running about $40 less per rim

I have the kinlin xr300s built on old OEM DT swiss hubs, 28/28, radial up front and 2x in the rear, DT swiss comp double butted spokes, wheelset weight is around 1560grams. Pretty darn stiff wheel for being $40/ rim and often overlooked on BF, I can feel more bumps in the road the the A23s or my Spinergy PBO Xaeros. The XR300 spin up pretty darn fast and hold speed better then those two wheels. They are built like a tank but lighter then most 30mm rims out there, I put a season of CX on them and they are still fine w/o flat spots, great in crit races too. These are my "go to" wheelset for the fast hilly club rides (55-60mile loops). For our fast flatter club rides I elect my 50mm carbons for the paceline work.
These rims are popular if you check out the wheel build section of the WW forums....258page thread ...you will learn allot from that read https://weightweenies.starbike.com/fo...hp?f=3&t=74564

They're fairly popular over in the Road Forum, or were at one time. When I had my PowerTap wheel set built a couple of years ago, I used the Kinlin XR-270 for the front and XR-300 for the rear at the recommendation of my wheel builder. He thought they were a great rim for the price. I would have to agree. They're not phenomenally better/different than any other similar rim, but they're quite a bit cheaper than much of the competition.

Yeah I think that Im gonna go prowheelbuilder and get the T11 laced up to the silver XR300, $560 w/o skewers seems like a good price and a better rim than the open pro's

I have the Campy Zonda 2 way Fits on two bikes at 260ish and new Fulcrum racing zeros on another. Great wheels and I imagine the Neutrons are great from the reviews I have read.
