Visit to the Doc

Went in for my last physical before my insurance runs out with my parents. My last appointment was December 27th which was a month after I started working out. I weighed 298lbs and a blood pressure of 130/78 (doesn't seem right compared to my current) and a resting heart rate of 81. Today I weigh 269lbs and I have a blood pressure of 110/60 (low?) and a resting heart rate of 68. Other than that I have no medical issues, which is a relief because I thought otherwise. She recommended a thyroid and lipid test so I'll get that done next week, as well as a visit to a dietitian.

Oh, apparently I'm not gluten/carb intolerant. I was coming off Atkins and it took me a little longer than normal for my body to adjust. Doc said Atkins isn't healthy and I should stay away from it, so I will.

Well, good for you Ax - aside from having some more weight to lose sounds like you're doing pretty well. :)

Sounds like some positive steps in your health. I'm not sure your blood pressure is too low, because it's about the same as mine and sometimes is that low when a person is athletic, even if still a bit heavy. If it goes any lower though I'd see a doc.

I think the Dr. would say something if she thought your BP was too low.
My last "visit" with the DR. on Tue. was a "intramedullary nailing of the tibia".

Low blood pressure is generally diagnosed only when the patient complains they get lightheaded or pass out when they stand up. I have low pressure numbers (90/45 at rest, though it's higher lately), with no symptoms. I get asked "do you get dizzy?" by pretty much everyone who takes a reading. I had one doctor who insisted on running a bunch of tests, because low blood pressure can by a symptom of a number of diseases (diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, probably others), none of which I had.

Sounds like some pretty good progress!

I myself had a general medical last week. The results are in, but I haven't made the appointment to go back to the doc, probably will in a week or 2! lol. I have a race next weekend, so I'd rather not go to the doc before that either way!

That happens to me all the time (standing and initially feeling dizzy) but my doctor says (for me) it's just a natural part of lower bp. I generally run about 115 over 70, but after a bike ride it goes to 115 over 65.

Keep an eye on your blood sugar as well.

Tractor legs,

What you describe sounds a lot like orthostatic hypotension. It occurs after quick postion change; From laying to sitting or sitting to standing, or even from getting up from a supine, laying, position to a standing position. This rapid position change can cause temporary blood pooling in your lower extremities. If you expect this to happen, and take a few seconds for your body to reach a equilibrium, you may prevent, or greatly minimize the symptoms. If it continues, or if you pass out, ccall/see your physician.

Hi. Your blood pressure is perfect. The MAXIMUM recomended pressure is 120mmHg for sistolic and 80mmHg for the diastolic. Thet is the maximum recomended. 110/60 is an excellent number, not even near of being low pressure. The harder you train and the fittest you are, yopu might have low bmp and blood pressure. Keep up the good work!

I suffer from OH and it's partially due to low blood pressure 118/65 is normal for me. After talking with doctor a lot of the time it's because I like to sit with my legs crossed and he's always after me to stop doing that as it traps blood below my fold in legs.

breadbin 11-10-12 06:36 PM

well done on the progress. 30 pounds is nothing to be sneezed at! keep it up. 110/60 isn't low. they say a perfect bp is 120/80 but then there is no such thing as a perfect bp anyway it depends on the person.

osco53 11-11-12 02:35 PM

My BP is 120/85 on average, Im on meds, 6ft, 195 lbs, 53 years old,, waist is 36"

In High school I was 6ft, 190 lbs, never looked at my bp..waist was 32"

Funny how things move, change, yet stay the same.

When you get BP checked at an office visit, it only gets flagged if it is too high. BP can fluctuate quite a bit during the day, and not be unhealthy. If you are concerned, you can get your own cuff and check daily. I do, but on doc's orders. At your age, it probably isn't necessary.

As far as Atkins being unhealthy, I suspect that this sentiment arises from the fact that many people heard about the diet being "low carb / high protein", and started living off bacon cheeseburgers with out actually reading the details. If followed as written, it isn't that unhealthy. If your doctor is not a nutrition expert, he may have treated heart disease in Atkins "followers" and not been aware that many were following an uninformed version of it.

I don't do Atkins myself. I just try to eat healthier foods, like whole grains as opposed to white flower products and refined sugars, very little lean red meat, no ground meat, processed deli meats or sausages, getting most of my fat from nuts, olive oil, avocados. etc. Protein from fish, beans, and certain vegetables. It is called a Mediterranean diet, and is often prescribed for people like me with a history of heart disease.
