I’ve really enjoyed reading the post on this forum. I’ve been able to learn some thing’s from other people’s experiences which is already making my journey a whole lot easier. Thank you for your help.
A few words about myself, and then 1 question and 1 success story, back in 94 I bought a new Trek 820 MTB fast forward 18 years and it was time to air up the tires again and get back in the saddle . In January of 2010 I needed to lose 100 lbs. so I went and started walking but that was taking a toll on my knees and that’s when the light bulb came on and I looked at the 820 again. Since then I’m down to 230 from 290, 40 lbs. to go. My height is 5’10’’.
My question, I am looking for a 26x1.50 street tire that is tough, gets good mileage and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
My success story is the other day I rode up the Beaumont side to Oak Glen without stopping. Once I passed Wildwood Canyon Road I said, “Yeah, I can do this!” When I reached Los Rios Ranch, the highest point of elevation, I was pumped up.
Okay, back to reality now. In closing I want to tip my hat to all the C/A that ride for whatever reason, for fun or health may you continue on your journey safely.

You have a number of resources in your area to check out tires. Redlands has a noted bike shop, and Performance Bikes has a shop in Corona. Jenson USA has a shop an exit or two from Performance. I likes Performance, because they hd a wide range of quility and prices on everything from tiny stuff to bicycles. (having moved out of Redlands last year, I miss the ability to bounce between thse shops and compare things in person...).

Hi HuffinandPuffin, I like your screen name! Welcome and thanks for sharing your story, and we hope for continued success. Your Trek 820 is an ideal exercise bike. My suggestion for tires is the Continental SportCONTACT that comes in a 26 by 1.6, runs 80psi and costs around $35 and is usually available at Nashbar online or Performance. You will probably get about a hundred suggestions from different folks (all of them valid cuz there's a lot of great tires out there), but the Contis I use haven't let me down - my last flat was in 2006 and 99% of it was on Continental products.
