And it begins. spring is almost here and raging cagers are too.

Up here in the northeast we finally had a 50 degree weather day as opposed to the 2 feet of snow from the week before. out on my run at about mile 4 i see some guy hanging out his window going the other way screaming fa**ot. its not that im not used to being accused of my sexual prefferences on the bike or in running shoes but it was on the first warm day of the season. it would have been nice for at least a few ventures into the season before having ice or stuff thrown at me or being accused of anything.

any other BF'ers had ther first raging cager story of the year yet?

Yes. On yesterday's ride, some turd burglar in a blue pickup honked at my riding partner (who was behind me) for no good reason. We were both following the law and riding far to the right, out of the way of motorists. I saw him in my rear view mirror and he did have his right turn signal on, so I guess he couldn't handle waiting a few seconds to make his precious right turn

Yeah bombing down a hill sunday about 35mph, I have the lane and I get passed about a foot away by some guy trying to squeeze between me and the double yellow. I gave him a salute and he pulls over right in front of me and hits his brakes. I was able to pass him on the left and he speeds back up pulls alongside. His passenger rolls down the window. I told him I would meet him at the bottom but he (surprise) turned off before we got there.

Shouldn't have given him the bird I know but that's no reason to try and kill me.

I once told a screaming me-me that his need for profanity was due to his sexual inadequacy.
Then the fight was on.
Unfortunately, in this "dog eat dog" world there has to be a winner so I sent him to the hospital.
Then he tried to sue me but I got a better lawyer than he did.
That makes him a three time loser. He lost the war of words. He lost the fight, and he lost the lawsuit.
I chose not to send him a letter advising him of that.
All things considered, just ignoring the ignoramous in the first place would have avoided the escalation.

Happened on Tuesday by a car coming behind me around a curve. He almost brush me off the road into the gravel. Then the passenger flipped me off.

Thats one nice thing about winter. Less @ssholes.

We were riding the Solvang Century last weekend and some broad in the back seat of a Yukon rolled the window down and yelled "BIKERS SUCK, GET OUT OF THE WAY"

Some wag right behind me hollered "I love you too" back at her, which was amusing.

We were traveling in a rather large pack up a twisty hill, but still.

Not yet as I have kept my riding to at night and side streets. Although I just replaced the crank and fork bearings on my mountain bike and will be out on that this weekend for a bit. But the MTB is definitely not preferred on the road unless it is a marked lane because I am not all that fast on it. So I will cruise side streets, alleys, MUPs, and off-road trails.

But I am sure I'll run into some people soon since I will be riding more. Although most of my rides are on MUP's and the like.

Since I don't believe in coincidence, I think the OP might have a point since for the past couple of weeks, I've noticed that drivers have begun to act hostile to myself and other cyclist. All throughout autumn and winter, it's been relatively quiet and within the past few days I've been right-hooked (managed to stop in time), beeped at two or three times and have been told to "ride the sidewalk" twice. The last part about riding the sidewalk puzzles me since in two years of commuting, I've only heard it a few times, but never twice in such a short time.

Puzzling...

Just getting ready to start bike commuting again. Weather is getting nice. I'm sure I'll have some fresh stories to post here shortly. Bikes are not very popular around here. Even the bus drivers will run you off the road.

Other than the winter storms (SW winds at 15-30 with rain), I ride all season here on the SW coast of Washington. The MTB w/fenders is my winter bike. Spring means ~54 degrees F as opposed to 38-47 F through winter. Not unusual to be at 80%+ relative humidity and that means sweat! The thing I like about spring and definitely summer...LESS BIKE CLEANING!

We are ending summer, but i really don't notice a change in drivers though out the year . The only change is more like "why are you ridding it is to hot " which changes to "it is to cold to be riding at 3 am in the morning"

On my group training ride, I was in the lane as I was getting close to passing a team member. Was doing at 25-30 mph and this vehicle honks at me then crosses double yellow to pass. I had my go pro on...and right before I showed graphic about them honking at me, you can see my flinch from the honk. Me flinching at 1:54 mark

not to be rude, but I'd probably honk too. Driver had to pass in a blind bend over dbl yellow. You had an wide open bike lane and in the road about 3ft out cutting the turn. If you're going to pass someone at speed, check ur six and make the pass stick ie pedal.... If you can't do it safely, then wheel suck and ride the brakes.

Really? you are incorrect in your criticism. And to be honest...I'm shocked that you would honk too.

have a legal right to be where I was. I was NOT in middle of lane but was over due to my overtake speed. I was passing a slower rider. Auto could have waited a few seconds to let me complete my pass and move back over.. Honestly I was pedaling not that it matters. I have the right to lane. Car did not need to pass me until safe to do so. They crossed a double yellow due to impatience and made illegal move not me.

Operation on Roadway

21202. (a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:

(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.

(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.

(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge, subject to the provisions of Section 21656. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

(4) When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.

(b) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway of a highway, which highway carries traffic in one direction only and has two or more marked traffic lanes, may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of that roadway as practicable.

Amended Sec. 4, Ch. 674, Stats. 1996. Effective January 1, 1997.

In this area we have issues with entitled bikers. Bikers on roads they have no business being on backing up cars during times when people are trying to get home. Regardless of legality there is common courtesy. We also have people blowing through stop signs and lights. People in cars notice this and lose a bit of respect for the bikers as a whole. My favorite is when a group ride is going on and they come to an intersection and one person pulls into and stops to block traffic while the rest can blow through. Yeah...... and people wonder why people in cars have issues with bikers? Some of it self-imposed.

Each time there is a sub-group of people there is part of it that creates a "them -vs- us" mentality. What "us" does is justified and what "them" does is not.

Remember that you may have a legal right to be on a road at a certain time but common decency and courtesy should dictate that you refrain.

Also recall that when you are in your vehicle and you come across another vehicle that is going very slow and is holding you up. How do you feel? If you feel irritated then you need to stop complaining when a vehicle is irritated with you. If you feel "Oh well I'll just patiently wait back here for a while and maybe up that way I'll have an opportunity to pass, hope that person is having a nice day!" then you are the exception.

Legality is not the issue. Courtesy is.

i was not impeding traffic nor was I being an entitled jerk.

Seriously...when I am in my car, I try to think how I feel on my bike when a cyclist needs to take the lane. I follow rules of road. But whatever...criticize away

it is disheartening tho to be criticized and judged by fellow cyclists who I would hope have some inkling of what sharing the road with cars/trucks is like and that it is not being rude, discourteous or entitled to be following the law as I am suppose to be doing when riding on the road that I'm allowed by law to ride on.

BG, I didn't mention anything about legal rights, I'm just talking safety here. We all have legal rights on the road. But they don't know why we're out there on bikes, none the less our passing plans. We don't have blinkers and not many of use will use hand signs at 30mph pointed down. I might point out to the ground or something but that's about it. Though the law allows for me to use the car lanes, I'm not sticking my butt out there without checking my six at any speed be it 10mph or 50, and if there is a car there getting some type of eye contact & hand wave from them before I make a move.

I'm just telling you what I saw in that 5 second window.....I don't know how long the car was back there or if was coming around the bend to find you out of the bike lane then honk...iduno

PS, I don't honk at cyclist, I hate getting honked at myself and DO NOT do it to other unless its to warn them they are coming out and don't see me...ie checking their six and swing into the lane abruptly. But in 99% of the time I give them plenty of space and cross whatever yellow line is deemed safe for both them and my family in my car.
