Ozzie in over his head

Went out with chef and a few fella's for a 52 miles ride. Hilly has heck and fast, ending at 14.8 mph. Safe to say I am whooped. Legs are jelly, bum hearts. Heck not even sure I CAN feel my legs.

These fella's are rough.

:D

Every time I go on long rides (>30) I come back with a horrible headache. Why does this happen?

RIvmage 04-07-13 05:02 PM

Could be quite a few things:
Hydration?
Blood Pressure?
Fuel (Food)?

Funny I got the same question from Chef tonight via text message. Were both of you suffering headaches or did I give my answer to the wrong guy?

Drink more... You need some food for 52 miles but nothing crazy. I think I usually have about 1 clif bar for a flattish ride and if it's stupid hilly I'll have 3 of 'em.

But water... drink more before your ride, during your ride, and after your ride.

Ozzie, I can tell you that I get headaches when I get to much sun, as in sunburn. Sunscreen usually stops it for me. Just one more thing to try.

cant speak for chef but I asked him and he didn't know. I know he has suffered headaches from long rides before. Maybe that is why he asked.

You fellas are too funny. Thanks for the advice.

That could explain the headache!

Don't rule out allergies.

Usually I just get a sore rear and my legs feel like jelly after a long or ride where I'm really trying to ratchet up my performance a bit, but those things are probably normal.

My big weakness is heat. I can't ride if the temperature gets above about 80-85 degrees, especially if it's in the sun. If I'm in the shade, I'm not too bad, but in the sun, forget about it. It doesn't matter if I eat, drink, a combination of both, or don't eat, but I get terrible stomach pains. I've tried eating while on the rides and bring plenty of water but it just doesn't matter.

During the summer months I don't usually ride the bike path near our home because it's more of just a cement slab in the middle of undeveloped land next to a highway. While that's not a problem in itself, it is a problem when there aren't ANY trees to rest under if the need arises. The path may as well be in the desert. :twitchy: The C&O Canal has plenty of shade so that's where I'll spend most of those summer days. I absolutely HATE riding without any type of shade.

Wooden if the stomache pains are of the cramp variety, I have heard people swear by pickle juice to stop those.

I've heard that. While I like pickles and the juice isn't too bad, either, the after-affects leave me primed to fertilize Heinz Field for a season. :o

Is your helmet too tight?
Use an X-acto knife to carve out the unnecessary styrofoam in the inside.
Or loosen the helmet suspension,
Or buy a new helmet.
