62.9 Total Miles.... uh...

My first commute (this year) is tomorrow. My niece has a ball game that I'm going to go watch after work. Then back to home. Google says it is 62.9 miles after I adjusted the route to match what I will actually do.

My previous modern day distance PR was 42 miles and that was last Sunday. I have not been on the bike since. I'm adding 20 miles.... 20 .... miles.... to that.

The only positive is that I am doing 14.5 in the morning, 30 miles to her game, then the rest (around 18) back to my house. I'll be towing my Burley Travoy the whole way. Each time I stop I can make sure I drink and eat to help the next leg.

I am going to be hurting.

DaveSC 05-02-13 01:02 PM

yeah but it's the good kind of hurt, the hurt then you do something that you haven't done before. I like that kind of hurt.

TrojanHorse 05-02-13 01:03 PM

Ah, you'll be fine. if you can do 40, you can do 60 and you're breaking it up.

Drink plenty, eat enough and have a good time!

WonderMonkey 05-02-13 01:12 PM

I suspect you two are snickering and encouraging hoping for a long and painful post tomorrow night. JUST SO YOU CAN LAUGH AT ME!

chefisaac 05-02-13 01:21 PM

Just eat right and hydrate and have fun. Dont pack too much in the panniers.

They're not alone... :popcorn A video of you limping to go along with said long and painful post would be cool, too. Just sayin.

That's very cool that you'll be doing it. Good luck and I'm sure it will be worth it.

WonderMonkey 05-02-13 01:34 PM

In reality it WILL be a good hurt. This past Sunday I pushed it to keep up with the two I was with and finished on a hill and I was done. Glad I did it.

I have yet to go on a ride that I have regretted. And I have ridden in some interesting situations and weather.

Enjoy!

And make sure to grease dem thighs if you sweat alot. Nothing worse than road rash and having never fallen.

Since it is all in one day, I'd say it qualifies as a metric century! Hold your head high!

If I could do it when I commuted to work 32 miles each way a year or so ago you can do it, especially considering your bike rides a bit faster than mine, and you've lost some weight since I last saw you. However, yes it will hurt, and you will be dead tired at the end, but look on the bright side, what doesn't kill you hurts a lot. :)

If you lived closer, TrojanHorse would come ride with you just to take pictures when you passed out or flopped around on the ground half-way home! :roflmao2:

You'll do fine! Eat and drink smart and I look forward to the long post describing how good you feel having accomplished it!

And when YOU did it the seat wasn't adjusted right, etc. That bike was hard to pedal!

TrojanHorse 05-02-13 10:52 PM

nay sir, i'm totally encouraging you. I think you can do it! It might hurt, you might go slow but I have total faith that you can do it and it will launch you into a great riding season.

I only take pictures of PJ flopping around on the ground. he's just bitter, don't listen to him. :D

vesteroid 05-03-13 07:12 AM

no, he is evil. I know from personal experience. He rides to the top of hills, and pulls out his camera to take pictures of his buddies suffering as the come up behind him.

Then he laughs and rides away.

Evil, I tell you.

DaveSC 05-03-13 07:16 AM

If someone did that to me it would be incentive to push up to the top of the hill, remove my seat, and beat them repeatedly with it.

Haha, that reminds me of when you first got toe cages on your bike and we were riding to work and you stopped started shaking your whole body and the bike and just went down onto the street from a very tall curb. I laughed first, and asked if you were okay second, not realizing your had been frantically trying to get your foot out of the cage because you were falling but weren't trying to get them out properly.

Stretch in between the legs of your trip. When I do long-distance days and have to take extended breaks in between, the stiffness tends to set in making the next stretch more difficult. It can be avoided to an extent if you remember to stretch really well each time you get off the bike

I tell that story on myself here and there. Fell right into the street. I'm lucky a car didn't kill me.

That's good advice, I will take it! Thank you very much.

First leg is done. Last night and this morning I kept trying to talk myself out of doing it. I often do that until I leave the driveway and then it's awesome. It's too far. Yes, I still think that's true but "too far" is a mindset, excepting injury. I don't have this or that at work. HELLO! That's why I bought the Burley Travoy!

I started out on my normal (from last year) route. It is a combination of 4 lane roads, bike trails and one short stretch on a sidewalk that nobody uses. I got downtown to the bike path and about a half mile in I noticed a "Bike Path Closed - Construction" sign. Super. There is a 50% chance that there is actually some construction. There was. I spent a few miles going through town and attempting to get back to the bike path with no success so I just used the bike lane through the city to continue on to work.

During the ride I keep thinking about my next leg, which is about 30 miles. With that once I get to the bike path it stays bike path until just a mile away from the ballfield I am going to. This morning a meeting noticed showed up at work and I'm not going to get to leave as early as I want so I'm going to have to push more than I would like to so I can see the game. Not good. When extending distance slower is the name of the game.

Right now my legs feel good. I certainly know I rode it but I took it easy.

WonderMonkey 05-03-13 05:01 PM

I didn't make it. Had a late meeting and missed being able to go to my niece's ballgame. I'm at home now with 37.44 miles in for the day. My legs are tired.

It was a frustrating day filled with construction detours there and back on different routes. Re-routes that were bad choices, etc. got me down a bit mostly because I was hoping to be able to get to her game in time to see some of it. At a key point I called my wife and she let me know that the game would probably be over by the time I arrived so I took the longer route home and here I am now.

The wind really added some effort into the ride. My legs are smoked. I COULD go out and get the other miles to get to 60 but that would mean I would not ride tomorrow. Now I have a chance to ride tomorrow if I can walk.

cyclist2000 05-03-13 08:11 PM

there's always next time. Remember LSD (long slow distance) and you can increase the distance. I have decided to do a century on my tour this year, so I am working on the hard miles right now and the LSD when I do the century.

TrojanHorse 05-03-13 11:37 PM

Monkey - bully for you for making the effort. Seriously!

Don't be shy about trying again either.

I try to average about 10mph when I am increasing distance. On this ride I was going to be late so I pushed it, then realized I wouldn't make it to her game.

Thanks. No problems with the trying again thing. I don't let not making something deter me. I also like to put myself in "finish or else" positions like getting dropped off xx miles away, etc. Middle school softball is ending this coming week so I'll get more commutes in. With a few of those under my belt a 60 miler is certainly doable.
