I've been on a steady program of:

1. Lose weight
2. Lower handlebars
3. Go faster
4. Have more fun
5. Repeat

Each time I lower my bars I give myself several weeks to see if I'm comfortable before cutting the steerer tube. My last adjustment was 10mm and brought the bars all the way down. 3 weeks later, I continued to love the fit and cut the tube.

About 2 weeks after cutting the tube I began to notice some minor shoulder discomfort. I had recently changed my workout routine to include 75 pushups every other day instead of the 50 I had been doing. Not wanting to blame the bike for my shoulder pain I discontinued the pushups. 3 months later, I've got a bad case of tendonitis in both shoulders. I've been off the bike for 2 weeks now and my shoulder pain is lessening.

I've already contacted my, non local, LBS about a new fork $231 + shipping. The guy helping me brought up the one bit of good news "At least now you know your limits".

For me, no more cutting the tube until having ridden at least 1,000 miles in new position.

Have you thought about a new stem, instead of a new fork? Seems to me that'd be the cheaper solution to your issue.

How do you do that? I thought about flipping my stem into the higher position, angled up instead of level with the ground, but I measured it and that won't get me there.

You can buy stems in different lengths and angles.
Just buy one with a larger angle.

I'm personaly one that would always rather a bit of spacer on top of the stem rather then cutting.. athstetics be darned

if you have a normal stem, it's most likely 6-7*. Thomson stems are 10* and cost about $60-70. I'd also get one 10mm short then you have to bring the bars in and less pressure bending over.

The bar wasn't cut, the fork steerer tube was cut.

For the average guy, I don't see the need to cut the steerer tube, unless it is sticking up a ridiculous amount.

I'd rather leave well enough alone, especially when it may help sell the bike to someone who needs it more upright.

I cut 2 inches off the carbon steer tube first day with the super six. I don't save it for resale value, plus ita not safe to have allot of spacers on top of the stem.

I've used one of these delta stem extenders on a bike. Not as clean looking as the original steerer but it works.

this is a thread on another forum where someone used it... seems to be a cleaner way if you go wth the extender method... knock the star nut out and it turns into a quill type internal stem but still use your normal 1 1/8 spacers and stem... you can have up to 80 sticking out on top of your steerer tube or less if you want... neat system IMHO

this is the other side... if you know how man spacers you had when it was comfy and your stem specs you can punch that orignal setup info into this calculator and then play with it till you find the proper size stem

I'm not quite sure what the cap bolt threads into. But I guess it'll make sense when I get it.

I just ordered on myself... the top cap tensions the headset like normal... but under it is a long screw to tension the quill type thing at the bottom... not sure when mine will get here... but for me its a temp solution till I get a frame and fork that fit a bit better

I'm going to try it, I only need 10mm under the stem to be okay. Just to be safe, I'll probably start with 20mm and work my way down.

Ya thats what the guy in the thread I linked to in the post did... his fork was just a little to short for his new frame so he put enough for a few mm of spacers under the stem
