I have been bike shopping for a few weeks and read all the advice. Seems like hybrid 29er is the usually recommendation. I have been looking at Kona's as they seem to be a MTB company and it seems like they would build beefier bikes.

The Dew Plus is on clearance for 500$ at a LBS and it has high spoke count and quality components. The only possible issue is the tires only go up to 85psi.

I have looked on craigslist and here in portland I don't find bikes on there to be super cheap.

Any thoughts?

Hi i dont know bikes but I do know that wider tires dont need as much pressure to be as effective as skinny tires. 85 psi should be ok

Is the Dew steel framed? It really shouldn't matter. But steel would be a good choice for you. I'd think the Kona would be up to the challenge. Just have the wheels gone over. Spokes releived and tensioned. They should then hold up just fine. Good luck with the bike. Not knowing the particulars and component level. At 500$ it sounds decent. I'd say if it fits and you feel good on it, Then get it. The price is right.

Im not sure how to post links, but no it's aluminum as most everything that i looked at was. if you google "2012 dew plus" it's the first link on the kona page.

the big standouts for me are disk brakes and the diore rear derailer. The rest of the components appear quality.

I weight about the same -- 330, 6'2" -- and own a Kona Ute, which is a long-tail commuter bike. I love it and it is holding up well though I've only had it a few months.
