Sometimes just riding to enjoy the outdoors
I know most of us set goals to meet for health, endurance or what ever. Over the last month and a half anytime I had free time something had to be done, it was hot as hades, or thunder storms so my milage is way down. Yesterday I had the day off weather was perfect 80 degrees low humidity sunny . My first thought was head for the Little Miami Scenic trail and get 30-40 miles in . I just didn't feel like it I just needed to be outside. So I hit the local 4000 acre county park I ride , But with a different plan . There are creeks along the trails a big lake so I strapped a tenkara rod (telescopic japanese fly rod) to the top tube of my steamroller, put a little tackle in the cargo pockets and headed out . I caught many fish from 2 in chubs to 10 in bull bluegills, watched deer fawns , checked out wildflowers in the tall grass prairie areas ate a few wild black berries right off the vine . and rode 8 1/2 miles Just what this tired old hillbilly needed to get my mind back on track

That sounds like absolutely a great day.
Outdoors time is one of the significant benefits I get from bicycling, but it is hard to explain to people I know. I like to ride on all days in any weather, because the bad weather is part of life too. I think we were meant to be part of nature, and my former life of living in one climate-controlled box and driving in a smaller climate controlled box to work in a big climate controlled box (rinse, repeat) was just unnatural. Bicycling gets me outdoors time. Another big benefit.

Living someplace scenic sure makes it more enjoyable. Most of my riding is through suburban sprawl, but it is nice to get out into the back country some time. My usual weekend rides take me along the Pacific Coast. Scenic with a cool ocean breeze to boot.
