A Few Pics Of The New Horse

G'morning. As promised, here are a few pics of my new ride, the Trek Domane 5.9. Among all of the things that I am not, Photographer is near the top of the list so I apologize in advance for photo quality. I also apologize for that hideous looking saddle, lol. It's a John Cobb V Flow that the LBS loaned me to try out. So far, I think I like it but, if I pull the trigger on it, it'll be a black one. Unfortunately, this was the only V Flow they had for me to try. Anyway, here ya go...

Congrats. Nice bike. I've always liked the way the duotap cleanly disappears into the frame. So much better than having a Garmin unit zip tied to the top of the stay at some funky angle in order to pick up the cranks. Ultegra=like Mechanical=like How much tire clearance does a stock Domane have? Could it fit 28mm + fenders?

Let us know how you get on with the Cobb saddle. I'm very interested in Cobb, ISM, etc.

The Duotrap definitely makes for a cleaner look. According to Trek, the Domane can handle 28's and you can mount fenders on them. However, I'm not sure if you can do both. The 25's that it comes with are super soft. I had no idea that there was such a difference between 23's and 25's. Of course, I'm sure the frame also comes into play, too.

I think I'll like the Cobb once my IT's get used to it. Right now, I'm pretty sore but I'm sore on the bones instead of the soft parts. Taking that as a good sign.

Hey nice bike!

I notice you've got the hoods pointed in quite a bit. I'm curious as to why? I just converted my 105 5600 shifters to 5700s and have been paying attention to where they're mounted, not sure I've got mine right.

Cyril, if I stay with the Cobb saddle, the black (which I would get) has some red trim on it.

Ya know, I'm not sure that there really is a right or wrong position. That angle is just comfortable for me. It's easy to have my hands on the hoods and work the brifters with my ring and pinky fingers. Ya just kinda have to find what's comfortable.

That is a slick looking bike. Congrats!

For years, my primary hobby was swords and if you've never tried to photograph a sword, you wouldn't believe how difficult it can be. I was surprised to find that bikes are the same way. It's very easy to end up with images where it looks like one wheel is 700c and the other is 26". Lot's of areas for distortion in the proportions. Your photos came out pretty darn good!

Thanks, Corwin. Photography is a bit of a hobby of mine but I long ago came to terms with the fact that nobody will probably ever call me a Photographer. lol

Nice bike. I am glad though that my Madone has s standard seat post. Those aero things look like they may be hard to find once they change the models down the road.

I read in your other post that the ride is real smooth. I wonder if, since Trek doesn't deal with Lemond any longer, maybe they adopted his geo into this bike? I know my Lemond Chambery was a smoother compliant ride than my Madone.

Thanks, Beanz! As a matter of fact, the seat post on this particular bike is the one from my Madone. I've been thinking of trying to see if I could try one from a Domane just to see if there's any difference in "feel". Not sure the shop would go for that, tho, without my having to just buy one outright. I guess I won't know until I ask, tho, lol.

Interesting thought on the geometry. I hadn't thought about it but I'm sure it's very possible. Whatever they did, though, it works as far as smoothing out the ride goes. The only "not as positive" comment that I'd make so far would be in terms of handling. The "twitchyness" of the Madone very soon turned into "responsive" for me. It was an extremely nimble, extremely responsive handling bike. The Domane is a little bit less so. Not a LOT, but just enough to notice. It feels just a little slower to respond in handling. To be honest, though, one of my own dislikes about the Madone was that, while I loved the response, I always felt like I was one twitch away from going arse over elbows while doing any hard cornering. I'm sure it was in my head but I always felt that way. Otherwise, I loved that bike. That said, the Domane feels a bit more sluggish but makes up for it in feeling a bit more stable. That's a trade off I'm OK with. If any of that even made sense?

Great looking bike.

I like the touches of red on an otherwise mostly black bike.

I will never go back to 23s again. You're right. The ride with a 25 is so much smoother. Besides, there are those who say that there is no difference in rolling resistance between them. I suppose that those who get paid to ride would know the difference, but for us here, no practical difference.

I also love having a Duotrap. Wish all frames has the same system. Trek must have a patent on the thing. It sure is elegant.

You have a sweet bike.

Thanks, Volo. When I do something about that white saddle it'll all be good! lol. You're right on the tires. Such a small change, such a big difference.

Very nice. How do you like the Utegra Di2?

How did the Madone 5.2 RIP? Hope you were not injured in its demise.

Robert, about three and a half weeks ago, I was 12 miles into a ride on the Madone and had a catastrophic parts failure. My rear derailleur hanger snapped off and threw the derailleur into my rear spokes. The derailleur pretty much exploded and, in the process, snapped a chunk out of the drive side drop-out and broke off a chunk of the CF surrounding it. It was a terminal injury. Luckily, I managed not to go down but I really have no explanation as to how I pulled that off. Just my lucky (kind of) day, I guess, lol.

Trek warrantied my frame, derailleur and hanger, and back wheel. They offered me either a new Madone 5 series frame set or a new Domane 5 series frame set and, after test riding a Domane, that was what I went with. I kept the salvageable parts from the Madone and transferred them over to the Domane so I've still got the Ultegra mechanical gearing along with a new 105 11-28 cassette. No Di2. I may or may not upgrade at some point. I haven't decided yet but, to be honest, the mechanical shifting works just fine for me so, unless I decide at some point to sell, I'm kind of inclined to keep things as they are.

Thanks!

Very pretty. I like greys and blacks, especially with an accent color. I went with blue for the accent, but the red works.

Your stem, brifter angle and cable routing are a bit different; is this a pro fit and / or the way you like it?

Adrien, a little of both. The stem is taller due to some back and neck issues. That's the stem that I had on my Madone. The geometry on this bike, though, is just relaxed enough more that I may go back to the original stem. I'm going to have to spend more time on it before I decide. The brifters are just angled for my own preference. They just kind of follow the natural angle of my wrists. I almost went with blue, too, but the shop was out of blue cable housings.

Thanks!
