What do you think of the wheelset in the auction?

I am looking to replace the Bontrager wheels that came with my 2013 Trek 2.1 for something a little more bulletproof. Appears these have 36h spoke count and have a little "racier" look than the stock wheels. Currently, I am 255lbs. and descending, but want to have something that will get me through to the weight where carbon clinchers will be more user friendly. Would love to have a lighter wheel with some aero, but don't want to break the bank.

As always, I welcome any advice from your folks out there.

Heavy as *** is what I think. They should be plenty sturdy though, but those 42mm wheels are usually fixie material.

If you want bulletproof and they're built well (who built 'em?) then they should do the trick. 32 spokes should be fine.

Good looking wheels, but looks like the 20f/24r spoke count is good up to 210lbs. I like the pricing for them though.

Those RR585 rims are nice and sturdy, they'd probably last you a long time. I'd lean that way if you can swing the expense. I actually have a set in my shed waiting to get built up. :)

The SL42s, if their listed weight is accurate, weigh approximately 50 grams each more than the DT Swiss 585s (which tend to run around 565 grams by most accounts). The 585s should be more than adequate. So, the additional 100grams would be purely for aesthetic reasons, unless you're accustomed to riding in excess of 40kph and believe there to be some aero advantage as well.

I've got a pair of the 585s that I built up last year and am very happy with them. They probably have 10,000 trouble free km on them at this point.

However, I really wanted to build up a set of HED Belgium C2s. I was on a budget and simply couldn't get those rims at a reasonable cost at the time.

You might want to consider the current crop of wide'ish rims. I would include the aforementioned HED Begiums, Pacenti SL23s, Velocity Synergy OC. Any of these will also be approximately 100 grams per rim lighter than the 585s and 150grms/rim lighter than the H+Son SL42s.

My personal first preference would still be the HED Belgium C2, followed by the Pacentis if budget were a concern.

I love my H Plus Son formation face 42s on my commuter. I built them 32H 3x front and rear. They look sexy as heck and ride like a dream. Yes they are a bit heavy, but they roll forever.

The Ultegra hub wheel set just might be the one. Seems it is as lightweight that I can afford(weight wise) right now. I also reached out to Psimet to see what he thought about building me a set.

I do like that look as well.

I like that top set.... might be something i want for my CAAD8 with the breaking spokes...Would surely be an upgrade...

I just cleared 280lbs. this past weekend (down from 300) and was looking at some nice wheels in the $250-$300 range. I had reached out to PSIMET and he put together a really nice package for me that was closer to $400. I tried several online wheel builders and they were all competitive in the $370-$415 price range for a rim that satisfied my needs (and weight).

At $275.00 (free shipping and no tax) this put $100+ in my pocket for tubes and tires. Ironically I purchased these last night and saw your post this morning. Yeah, they're definitely pretty burly on weight but considering my weight, a five pound wheelset is not suddenly going to make me any slower or struggle anymore up the next rolling hill.

I'll be sure to update this post once I receive them, get them mounted and ridden.

That's the set I went with. Ordered from Velomine direct and had them in 2 days. Just waiting on the new 105 cassette to arrive and I will throw them on the bike with GP4000s 25's.

I think i will probably order the Nashbar Vuelta HD set...For $149 it's not that much of a gamble i think...I am going to wait until Tuesday to see what my LBS says about my 1 month old less than 200 miles wheels that already popped 2 spokes...the way they are pinging i just can't stand it and alway am wondering now if or actually when a spoke will pop...

I have the HDs and they are heavy, but bombproof wheels. You'll notice the extra weight but it will not affect your average speed ( It didn't affect mine). I really like them and the stiff feeling. The $$ spent was worth the peace of mind.

If you can swing the extra $115, I would go with http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Shimano-...item3a7f810726. The 105 hubs are going to be smoother and the wheels are a little lighter. The Velocity Deep Vs get great reviews from big riders. I bought from Velomine and do recommend them.

How long have you had them... time and miles ... Did they come true and have they stayed that way? I am not to worried about hte weight... i don't think a lbs or 2 will make that much differenc ein my overall achievements...
