Do you have an eating problem?

Hey all, just wondering if anyone else has an eating problem.

My problem is portions, and making healthy choices.

Starting August 1st, im going to be giving up soda (might have occasional diet soda though- luckily I don't like the taste)

I had one and didn't know it, because I didn't know the nutritional value of what I was eating. I thought I did, but I didn't. Once I started taking a look at that (via smartphone app) and became more educated, the weight started falling off on its own. 69lbs today in 4 months.

Yup. Choices are poor and portions are way too big. Soda is also an issue, though I'm down to just a few a week. That's a huge improvement, and will continue to decline until gone. I WILL NOT drink diet soda. I also will not drink colas. Their are cancer-causing chemicals in there, and I don't need that crap again! I know there are carcinogens in many things we eat, but as I learn more, I'm making educated choices. My Oncologist "encouraged" me to lose weight. OK, I guess it's serious time, now. Wish I didn't love ice cream as much as I do. Why can't pie be health food and broccoli be bad for you?

Replace ice cream with watermelon. Pie with jello.

Replace broccoli with dirt and rocks, as I think they taste better.

K. I'll go back to Addiction now.

I think we all do to an extent. I love food, I love colds drinks, I love sugar and cream in my coffee, I love to eat sweet things at any time if the day. But if I want to live every day the lord blesses me with I am going to learn to control my eating. I am more conscious now with what I eat. I try to drink mostly water. I am working on portion control now.

In this day and age it is almost un-American not to have one.

Quitting soda is a great start. If you start reading your nutritional labels you will immediately start seeing other things that you should cut out too. All I can say is to stick with your plan and don't give up. Your body's cravings will fight you, especially if you are combining with an exercise program.

Like most people, I used to have no idea how much I was ingesting. In 2011 I began planning out my day so that I consume at or below 2000 calories and no more than 200 g of carbohydrates. Most days I try to either ride run or swim to create a deficit.

I did that in 2011 and went from 306# to 237#. I stopped the counting in 2012 & went back to free feeding, thinking that I had a handle on things. Wrong! I gradually worked my way back up to 265#, even though I was still physically active. I resumed monitoring my intake again in 2013 and am currently down to 235# & slowly dropping.

When I was a kid the best compliment you could pay my mother was to hand her a totally clean plate after dinner. And I was willing to oblige every day

My choices are pretty good these days (I very rarely have a Coke) but my portion control needs some help. Also I eat so fast it seems like I'm finished while others are just getting started.

Yes, most definitely have issues with my eating, and now that I'm married, my wife feeds me portions that are really too large.

I used to be able to maintain mid 250s but now I'm consistently in the 265-275 range. At least I've come down a bit from the 281 that I weighed in January.

I am really tall and people often tell me that I don't need to lose weight. Well they are not me and I would rather be around 230-235 like I was in 2008 when I was riding 200-300 miles a week. I know people mean well but I resent it.

Yes I do. My problem is eating past being full. I love food, and if something tastes good, I just keep eating and eating even if I'm full, there is always room for one more piece or one more bowl. Full was never the end point, more like the mid point and I wouldn't stop until I was miserable. I have done pretty good with it this month, but know it is something I will have to watch out for my whole life.

I do not have an eating problem; food goes in my mouth, I chew, I shallow, I digest and do what follows that. I do have a control problem; I am (was) on a see food diet, I saw food and I ate it! I was also on a light diet, If it was light out I ate, if its dark out I turned the lights on and I ate! No Problem!

OK, jokes aside. I do have a food problem --- I love food! I love to eat! I like to eat the poorer choices when it comes to food! That is a problem if I want to live without Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol and Diabetes! Oh, when I was 290 I had three out of the four and was most like, with my family history, working on #4 !

I just like to tell my wife that I am "Not full, but I am finished".

But yes I am prone to stuffing myself to the point of pain.

I think the "Clean plate club" got a lot of us that are 50 plus (yeah I know another forum). Those raised by depression era (and in my case a WW2 era) parents were clean plateers. As Tunavic said clean plate was a good thing. I do not know a kid I grew up with that did not here some form of "clean your plate there are starving kids" somewhere.

Yes.

I never feel full.

My impulse control is lacking.

I ate an entire bag of cookies today. I can't have things like that in the house.

I have learned to put only as much on a plate as I should eat. Sad to say that I often have to ditch the wife to go grocery shopping. She does not have an eating problem. She likes to eat crap, and doesn't have a problem. At the store she fills the cart with junk, and hurries me through the produce section.

On my part, I do have occasional backslides. These involve watching TV and refer raiding.

I am at mt best when I meticulously track input, and ride.

I try to eat real food, and avoid Frankenfood that my wife, and so many others aroind me take for granted. It's hard.

OK

I haven't had a "regular" soda for about 40 years or so - maybe longer. Perhaps 1 diet soda a month - I drink H2O

Don't ask me about ice cream, though

I like others just love the taste of food. I don't care if I'm full I will eat a little more. For the past month I have really tried to cut out as much processed foods as possible and use the palm, fist, cupped hand guide for portion control. Protein the size of your palm, carbs the size of your fist and veggies as much as you could hold in one cupped hand. Really while it doesn't seem like a lot if you add one or two low calorie protein shakes through out the day it's way more then enough. I try to eat 5 feeding a day but most of the time I am so full I only get 4 in.

I gave up soda about 4 years ago... I used to guzzle diet coke like nobody's business. No noticeable effect on my waistline but there can't be anything good for me in there. Meanwhile, full-sugar sodas are nothing but raw calories. I largely drink water now. I put a reverse osmosis system under the sink and that water tastes better than anything. (NB - california tap water is truly awful, you may not need it)

For me, portion control and eating slowly are my bugaboos. I have a rather significant fondness for wine too, I'm sure that doesn't help. If I wait till I'm starving to eat, I'm guaranteed to eat way more than I should. I'll feel full 15 min. after I'm done eating and then stuffed silly 30 min. later, and full of regret.

It's a process.

Will power and self control is my issue. I have been trying to stick with 1800 calories a day using the My Fitness Pal app to keep tabs on my food intake. Then I'll grab a pretzel, cookie, etc while at work and before then end of the day I have 400-500 extra calories. My wife doesn't help when she comes home with cookies or brownies or something. I am not big on cakes or ice cream so they don't call to me but cookies are my down fall. Grab one or two and move on.

Then it's the eating late at diners. HUGE portions that become more of a challenge than smartly eating half or a third and bringing the rest home. Just one more bite, then another, and another...

My wife just said to me yesterday "we need to do better. Eat better, not as late and portion control". I guess she had reached that point. I have been doing better in the past few weeks but I wouldn't say I have mastered control yet. It takes time and I am focused on encouragement over discouragement.

Probably point of view but I didn't have an eating problem, I had a will power and habit problem. However that's probably what the OP is actually asking so I won't play on words.

I used to have that issue and I knew I had it. My issue was lifestyle. Coaching all the time, getting home late, in ballparks all weekend, etc. My wife as well. Didn't take the time to prepare food so we ate on the run. Each year I would end up worse than I did before.

So I found a way to make life easy on myself and weight started to come off just from better nutrition. Add in some exercise (biking, etc) and I now I 100% believe I can get to wherever it is that I need to be.
