Looking to build!!!

Hello all,

I posted a few days ago, about commuting! I have found that my bike doesn't fit the bill for what I want! I may build one and looking for suggestions!

Urban commuter, steel frame& fork, 26 in wheels, and most important
The ability to take a beating! I weigh in at just under 400 lbs, and if commuting I will have about 25 lbs extra! I am thinking to travel as light as possible!

I am just doing some research now! But will soon dive into building something to fit my wants. Budget will be around 1500.

Suggestions for complete bikes are welcome too!!

Thanks!

The Surly Troll is a tough and very versatile frame and 25 lbs is a lot of commuting gear. I can tour on less than that ;) http://surlybikes.com/bikes/troll

$1500 is an ample budget. Another standard choice that would fit your desires would be a Surly Long Haul Trucker. They come in a 26" wheel style.

But you might do well to not blow your whole wad really quickly. Look on your local craigslist for an older, rigid mountain bike. That will give you a sturdy steel frame, 26" wheels, and it will have no problem with the weight. Just 'roadify' it with some slick(er) wheels (my faves), and it should do well for you while you take time to research, shop, test-ride, etc. Also, you may well find that the frame/fork can be the basis of your build, so you could swap on components as possible.

I missed your previous thread; what are you riding now, and how are you finding it insufficient? Why particularly are you interested in building instead of buying whole? Are you wanting/planning to do the build yourself?

I carried less than 25lbs on my San Francisco to Los Angeles credit card tour!

As far as bikes, I wouldn't limit yourself to steel alone; you'll have far more options if you're willing to consider aluminum frames.
