Perhaps you let the hills get to your head. Don't let them sike you out, ride them as often as possible and soon you will own them. You shouldn't need any extra calories for a 10 mile ride than what is consumed by your daily meals.

After my excruciating near fatal heart attack in late August of 2009 at age 53, I never imagined that I’d one day pedal a 35 pound 29er hardtail to and from Jim Thorpe, PA., and yet, that epic riding adventure is now behind me.
If there’s anything I’d like to impress upon others, it’s not the nature of my personal achievements, but instead, it’s the potential health benefits of bicycling. For instance, just 5 days after returning from my 200-mile Jim Thorpe, PA ride, my “at rest” heart rate was an astounding 40~42 beats per minute! At age 57 and all things considered, that’s an impressive heart rate especially since it had been an ailing 73~75 beats per minute prior to commencing bicycling in April of 2011.
I owe it all to bicycling everywhere and riding monthly long distances. It’s still difficult to fathom that I’ve come so far in such a relatively short span of time and miles (4,702 total miles thus far).

DnvrFox, at roughly 17 years my senior, I deem it impressive that you ride off road via your mountain bike and I’m sure that inspires many as a result.
While I prefer commuting and riding my longer distances via any one of my portly mountain bikes over my lightweight road bike, I still prefer smooth roadways over bumpy trails (and the smoother the roadway the better). I love a smooth fast ride!
