I am fat..

And your dirty looks at the gym only make me push harder! Had some looks and whispers at the gym last night, but they were gone before I was done with my workout(two hours of cardio).:winter:

Anyone else deal with this?

Wilfred Laurier 01-22-14 11:38 AM

i used to

it can be very hard
but successfull drowning out most or all of the negative voices
often including my own
has been a major victory in my excercise regime

kylecivicsi 01-22-14 11:42 AM

Guy that was standing in the middle of the running lane on the gym's track told his son (who was conveniently standing next to him, blocking the entire lane) "wait for this big guy to pass before you go". I did good not to say anything. I kept going and rant my longest distance non-stop (4 miles) and my fastest unofficial 5k at 39:15. At least I was actually moving... he was standing there like an idiot with his coat and jeans still on.

Also, I'm more than ready for everyone's resolutions to fade.

Saw a big Big guy riding a rusty Huffy at the park last year...

Slowed down to shoot the @Hit - We stopped for a little so I could adjust his brake cable (also so he could get his breath)...

No problem we had a slow pleasant ride back to his camping spot...

What a friendly man... I hope he stays with it...

Welcome to the club. You'll find that most of the scoffers are actually wannabes looking to find fault in others to feel better about themselves. If they are thinner, they criticize the overweight; if they are younger they mock the geezers; if they are wealthy, they laugh at the guy in the well worn sweats who drove up in a 1996 Sentra; if they see someone more muscular than they are, they start rumors about steroids; if someone is thinner, they are obviously anorexic; if a person is better looking, they had "work done". In short, there will always be more horses arses than horses.

Show dedication and good character and anyone worth impressing will be impressed. If there is nobody else there worth impressing, don't worry about them. There is only one person you have to live with every moment of your life.

Why do you, or anyone else for that matter, care what others say?

Do you thing and don't worry about the rest of the world...not that hard!

THIS!!!

I am not working on myself strangers. I am doing this for my wife and my boys. If not for them expressing their concerns about my health last year, I would likely still be 65 lbs. heavier.

The truth is you don't know what they were thinking or whispering about. If it really worries you then ask next time. I look at people in the gym and I'm sure I've given some strange looks. It's mostly because I am wondering what they are doing.

I see people doing things with the equipment it wasn't designed to do.

I was riding down a bike trial by a high school last week and one in a group of typically mature fifteen year-olds, shouted at me "Hey, I can see your d***". I had the presence of mind to shout back "at least I have one. Jealous?" I was moving pretty fast and am not sure they heard me.

I wonder why they would be looking...

I belong to Planet Fitness as well and even though they say the gym is a 'No Judgement Zone' when people look at you....you know they have to be thinking something (At least I do:p). I simply do not let it bother me. I just think of all the overweight folks out there who do nothing about their health an realize I am one step ahead of them.

my philosophy about the gym and "looks" is to have blinders on. meaning I try ignore what I see. I know I can never look like that thinner guy with a better physique and I can never be with that sexy woman. also she does not want me to talk t her even though she is wearing skin tight cloths that show everything especially when she bends the ways she does. I just try to ignore it all to the best of my ability with out seeming like a robot. I mean I look around and talk to people when appropriate but try hard not to get sucked into all the BS

I have said this several times in here, in various ways, but all add up to "Life is too short to care about what strangers think."

It's not the gym that effects me.

It's the scuffles that break out behind me at group rides as everyone is attempting to elbow each other off my wheel. Bloody Leaches!

Darth Lefty 01-22-14 04:07 PM

Every gym has...
  1. the gym rats who don't care much what you think of them and vice versa
  2. the jocks who want to win at everything and see you as a loser
  3. the fitness resolution people, especially this time of year
If a guy has his kid at the gym he is probably #2 , they want their kids to beat other kids too. Ask him how his ACL surgery went, they've all had one :p

nymtber 01-22-14 04:16 PM

I've had people yell stuff out car windows, but never could understand them. Except ONE guy. Guess what he said?

"Keep it up your doing great!" As I was climbing a pretty steep but not horribly long hill down near the lake.

Gyms? Nope I'd have to drive 20-25 minutes out of my way. With gas at $3.65/gallon, NO THANKS. I have an exercise bike and "total gym pro" in the basement. No one gives me funny looks. But I do see the looks when I am out on my road bike. Whatever, You keep sitting in your car driving everywhere and eating whoppers and I'll keep riding my bike and eating somewhat healthy. See who lives longer and is happier :)

TugaDude 01-22-14 05:13 PM

Ignore idiots. Personally when I see a large person working out, trying to better their health, lose weight or whatever, I smile. I celebrate their resolve and their courage, knowing jerks are out there, but doing it anyway. Sadly, there's a steady supply of them. Keep on keeping on!

I thought the quote was: "Life is too short to drink cheap Scotch!"

You are absolutely right. The only people whose opinion matter are the people who are closest to you.

As to the rest...a big MEH!

jsigone 01-22-14 06:14 PM

I turn up the IPOD and get in my zone & hammer out what the day calls for, drink a recovery shake on the way home and repeat next day.

This happened to me last year, I was riding up a short but steep hill with my son... Some guy leaned out the window of his panel van and yelled something, I assumed bad. My son (he was directing it at my son) said he said "You can do it!" :thumb:

You and @eja_ bottecchia are out in front (ahem) but I find that as I get older I care less and less what other people think. Part of it is being comfortable with who you are of course.

That too.

squirtdad 01-22-14 06:59 PM

I am trying to work out hard enough that I don't notice other people. good tunes and a HRM help. They opened a fitness center at work and people are pretty good about just letting people workout...ie not smoozing the the CEO when he is trying to complete his circuit.
