Cycling beyond the West Fork Cogswell Dam
Two Sundays ago a friend and I rode from Highway 39 up the West Fork of the San Gabriel River to the Cogswell Dam (paved road). The climb to the top of the Dam is very steep. Distance total was about 14 miles. This last Saturday my ride buddy and I rode up to the Dam and beyond to the Rincon Red Box Trail (now dirt). Total distance 26 miles, 3100 ft. of climbing. Saw not another person out there. Had this lovely mountain trail to ourselves!!! I was doing well most of the way but the last mile I finally started feeling tired (and the elevation) and had to walk some short sections where the trail got "sketchy"...
The West Fork Trail:
Climb to the Dam is steep - 18%
Hitting dirt looking back at the Dam:
Some more pavement (see the dirt climb on the left):
We hit some lovely spots:
But since we were climbing a mountain most of the trail looked like this:
Last climb before we turned around - I finally had to walk:
Final view before a 13 mile downhill!
After the ride drove up Highway 39 to Crystal Lake and had a great lunch at the cafe and spoke with the roadies that came in... was a beautiful day. Temperatures (start high 40's finish mid-60's) were perfect!
