Wow! Now that was a Climb……..
Last Friday I went out to Palms Springs to ride. I dropped my girlfriend, my wife of 37 years, off at work and had 4+ hours to ride. With really no certain place in mind I headed West on 111 from Monterey Ave.. Along the way I hooked up with a husband and wife team that were going to ride up to the Palms Springs Tram. At the 16 mile mark we turned left from 111 on to Tram Way and started to climb. 700 hundred feet into the climb it went to a 6.6% grade and topped out at 15% in the next 3.8 miles up the road. The higher we went the steeper it got. That's the first time I've done a climb that long and that steep with no recovery points on it. I run a triple with an 11/28 in the rear and I kept wishing I had another gear. It was brutal, but I did it. I didn't time myself but I think I did it in 1 hour . I'll probably do it again in March anybody care to join?
February has been good, 400+ miles, my first century and now the Tram Way. Not bad for a 65 year old 230 lb. Clyde.

LMAO, yeah, until the battery dies and you're pedaling a 40# bike up that flipping hill.
Set it up Huffin! No way I want to ride up Onyx alone but in the company of other deranged souls? I'm game.
A quad... ha ha. Actually, hm. I really need one of those wi-fli RDs and an old-lady cassette for Onyx I think. That's a boatload of uphill.
Crystal Lake / Dawson's saddle is another local road that never stops going up (I think 8k of uninterrupted up)

I think that is the hill the pros passed out on on ToC last yr in 114* temps and after riding from temecula The ones that layed down, got 2nd degree burns on their backs, legs and butts from the smoking hot tarmac

OK, that was the end of a 100 mile day in the 114 degree heat and they came over the hill from your back yard. We... are not likely to do that.

OK, so this is it, eh? https://www.strava.com/segments/5522425
That looks painful. Anybody have a spare Wifli RD laying around they don't want for the weekend?
I wonder if @IBOHUNT thinks that is hilly. He has standards, you know. 500 feet per mile might qualify as "lumpy"

Yah that was after the 100 mile / 11k loop they did in my backyard in near record heat on Fathers day. Think the east grade was 106* and that was at 4000ft. All them euro boys were used to rain and snow they flew away from.

Yep, that would qualify as a climb. What an accomplishment for you!

Hm, found a 32 tooth cassette and the daggum wifli RD I'd need to use it. I wonder if it's really necessary over a 28 tooth rear.
Hm. 4 teeth is a lot. 32.1 gear inches down to 28 gear inches.

Mine's arriving tomorrow.
Any more of these little upgrades and I'll have enough components to rebuild one of my other bikes. Just need shifters and brakes!

I'd like to do the ride if for no other reason than to go where it is warm and to get out of winter.

I'm only interested in the story of the 37 year old wife, and the girlfriend.
Anyone can ride a bike up a hill. Not many can have their wife and g/f in the same car....
