I finally figured out the adjustments to the new trainer so I can ride on nasty days. Yes I felt like an idiot for not thinking of moving the wheel on the trainer the way I did before. I did discover after airing them up that the tires on my road bike are good, but one tube is bad. I also took and blew the old bike off and discovered it needs to go in for a good lube and to have the derailers adjusted (rear derailer is sticking and not keeping tension on the chain).

I didn't get a ride as my eyes were dilated from an Optical appointment with the VA for a regular and diabetic eye exam (that went very well and new glasses will be here in a few weeks).

I did ride the trainer for a few minutes, but not long enough. I also found out that I really want the old vintage 12 speed for the trainer inside as I think the street tires will be much quieter compared to the Geax mountain bike tires on the 29er.

I will take the 1984 Centurion Lemans 12 speed in tomorrow to be worked on while my wife and I get groceries to last us for the two week pay cycle. I am going to put pedals on that I can use with my cleats and keep the vintage pedals with cages. This bike is a 26 inch frame with 27 inch tires (I think the frame was measured by the upright tube that goes between the seat post and the crank).

Sounds like progress to me man. Domyou change your own tubes and tires? Soon as I can free up a lil cash want to get some smoother tires and tubes that will take a lil more pressure... im a carguy and pretty handy. Would like to do my own maintenance. And work on it myself... any resources youre aware of?

Many years ago (1987) my mom paid the mechanic at the local bike/ski/skate/hiking store (Bike 'N Hike in Albany, OR... yes they are still around) to teach me how to tear down, lube, and fix my bicycles. before that I had built single speeds and rebuilt a 10 speed my dad found in the dump (I was 17 at the time), but sometime in the early 90's my tools were stolen and I haven't replaced any of the bicycle specific tools. I can and will change my own tubes and tires, but that is about it anymore due to lack of tools and lack of space. I am sure there are plenty of books and internet articles on how to change component A or component B, but for me the best is getting hands on with a good mechanic (pay him for his time and have him tell you how to do a projects with you doing the labor).

I take my bikes to the local tire store and use their compressor to fill the tires unless I just need to top them off or I am in the field when I get a flat. I keep spoons, a tire gage, and a small patch kit in a bag under my seat when I ride and a small high pressure pump on the frame.

feel a lil stupid for not seeing that... honestly since i started hangin out here on the clyde thread i havent really checked out the rest of the site. Something I intend to do today.
