Completed the Tour de Cure

Yestrerday I complete the Pittsburgh Tour de Cure. I am a Red Rider (I have type-2 diabetes). I rode the 50-mile route which included 3000 feet of climbing. I completed it in 4 hours and 15 minutes (3 hours 45 minutes riding, 30 minutes at rest stops). It was a little cool in the morning but it turned out to be a great day for riding.

For those of you who are riding with diabetes, keep up the good work. My rding is instrumental in controling my blood sugar levels.

Any others out there riding in the Tour de Cure. Please speak up.

Congrats! I too am diabetic. Biking and a low-carb diet keeps my blood sugar normal.

Congrats. Riding the 30 miler in St. Louis in a couple weeks.

Congrats from a Red Rider Champion! I rode Saturday in Spokane's Tour de Cure, 97 mile route (why the ride director has a problem finding that extra three miles I'll never know). My diabetes was diagnosed early and I have been able to keep it controlled with cycling and paying attention to what I eat.

mccornwall 05-19-14 08:04 AM

Forgot to say...Red Rider here also.

spdracr39 05-19-14 08:44 AM

I am also a tour de cure red rider. Congrats !!!

WebFootFreak 05-19-14 08:45 AM

I'll be getting my first Red Rider jersey on 5-31. I'm doing the 40 mile route in the Memphis TDC. Since I started my jouney almost a year ago, I've had my diabetes meds cut twice. I'm hoping for this to be my only RR Jersey no matter how many times I ride TDC.

Little Darwin 05-19-14 08:46 AM

Congrats on the ride.

I am signed up for the Tour de Cure on June 7th in the Philadelphia area... but at this point, it doesn't look like I will get the minimum fund raising done, so I guess my registration fee will help fund something. ;)

When I have ridden before (twice), I paid most of the minimum amount myself, but, I can't afford that this year.

I've been told by medical personnel that my cycling is helping me not to
become pre-diabetic. Although I have volunteered for most of the charity
rides in my area; NY Bike MS, NYC Century, Tour de Bronx, etc. - this year
was the 1st time I volunteered as a marshal for Tour de Cure NYC. Had a
lot of fun. Was invited to volunteer again for TdC NJ and TdC LI; have to
check my calendar.

Congrats Red Rider!

I am also a Red Rider. Our Tour here in Oklahoma City is in about a month. I am about $31 from my goal but I haven't contributed anything yet so I got it covered. I am really looking forward to it.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on April 16 of this year. I decided to not take the meds and I purchased 4 trek bikes since then. Two for me and two for my wife who is also a type 2 diabetic. Together between diet and exercise ( and the support of our fellow Clyde's and Athena's) and riding our bikes we have lost over 35 pounds between the two of us.
We were going to ride the TDC in indy as red riders but she has carpal tunnel problems and will find out this week if she is going to be able to ride. The waiting has cut in to our fund raising so if we ride it will be mostly out of pocket.
I have until July 16 for my next blood test to get my A1C down and under control and I'm confident I can do it!
Thanks to all for riding and helping all the folks with diabetes. Also thanks for all the support given to both me and my wife from everyone here.

Last month I participated on the Long Beach TdC--my fifth one.

This is a great event, the feeling one gets when bystanders, and other cyclists, chant GO RED RIDER is priceless.

Our team raised over $35,000.00 for the ADA.

I have been a T2 diabetic for over 16 years. Cycling helps me control my BG levels.

You can say that I am beating diabetes one pedal stroke at a time. :D

@1loosemoose, as a long-time diabetic let me suggest that you do not stop taking your meds without first consulting an endocrinologist that you trust.

good luck on your efforts. :thumb:

Thank you for your advice. I didn't stop taking the medication, I just never started taking the meds. My wife was in my exact position 3 years ago and in that time she has gone from taking one pill a day to actually taking insulin shots. That still could be my future but not without a fight and at least giving it my best shot to avoid it.
If my A1C is not good in July I will start taking the meds. Thanks again for your suggestion I do appreciate it.

Us fellow diabetics stick together! :thumb: Diabetes took my Mom at a relatively early age. I won't let it do the same to me.

Let me know if you need any advice or words of wisdom from a long time diabetic.

Best wishes.

Thanks everyone great to hear the stories. Clearly bike riding is a key component of controling diabetes.

For myself, thanks to changing my diet and riding my bike many miles, my blood sugar is now under control. At one point I was taking two oral medicines and Victoza shot everyday. The doctor said if things dont change, I am going on insulin. My A1C was over 10. I am now down to one pill and my A1C is 5.3.

AWESOME!! That's what I want to hear! My A1C was 6.4 in April and I hope it's like yours on my next visit.

gman214 05-19-14 08:35 PM

Congrats to ALL the riders! Our TDC Chattanooga was Saturday, wasn't ready to ride but will be next time! April 15th my A1C was 7.1 which unofficially makes me a Type 2 given my weight and family history. Next Dr. visit is scheduled for July. I just started riding and lost 6 lbs since late April. Hopefully with diet, exercise, and riding, I can fight or control my diabetes.

comgrats. I completed mine on 5/17, did the 62.5 miles, and while I did not have any climbing, I did completed the route in 3 hr 15 mins, 19.2 mph avg. I rode in honor of my Type 1 wife Shirley and Type 1 Mother in Law Gayle and to help ward off getting type 2. I am down almost 25 lbs since Jan 1 and down overall 168 lbs sitting at 208 and aiming for 200.

Thank yo all who rode and supported these events. This is a cause that is very close to my family. Oddly, I never even heard of this until a few days before our local ride went off. It's on my calendar for next year though. I'll be participating on some level.

awesome accomplishment!

I think it's great you are riding for your loved one as well. I signed up to do Indy next month and I'm hoping the wife will be riding along with me. We just started riding in late March so we will be riding in the family fun ride this year but HEY!! We will be there.

jaxgtr 05-20-14 06:15 PM

I did the family ride with my wife 2 years ago, trying to get her into cycling and we both did the 30 miler last year...she was not able to do the ride this year so I had planned on the century, but the route happened to go through some sketchy road with some construction which I did not like, so I decided to ride the 62.5 instead that morning as did quite a few others.
