Square Taper or Hollowtech II for Clyde's
I am looking at changing my 53 / 39 for a compact crank as I start riding more and more hills. Currently run Ultegra 6600 and looking at either Compact 50 / 34 but not sure if I should save the money and just get Chain rings on an old crank and use a square taper bottom bracket or spend the extra and get a 105 and use the current Hollowtech Bottombracket.
Thanks
Allan

Ridden both, I like hollowtech II for ease of maintenance. However..save your funds and get chain rings...

I'm just shy of 400 lbs and although I chose a hollowtech crankset for my good bike, I can't really tell a difference between it and my square taper cranks. I'm familiar with the process to replace each but haven't done it yet and I think the external BB seems much more simple.
The only real advantage for me is that square taper cranksets tend to be FAR more attractive than external BB cranksets. I'll stick with (future) ease of maintenance.

I also am a big fan of how much easier it is to pull off external BB cranksets. If that is not a big deal to you and you do not feel like your current cranks are flexy the best bet is to probably stick with square taper. The square taper BB's do tend to last longer.

Thanks for the input. I think we are a lot harder on components not only due to our direct weight but also when we go uphill the force on the pedals would be greater.
I am going to stay with my old cranks and get some new chain rings. Maybe if I ever do rides or move to the plains I will put the 53/39 back on.
Appreciated
