Opinions on this Road Bike. Can it handle a Clyde?
Hi all, i've never had to really ask this kind of question but i've found an early 2000s Specialized Sequoia Pro that is in really good condition in my area for a good deal. It "looks" like the rear part of the frame is constructed partially from Carbon Fiber. I love the look of the bike but was just wondering if you guys think it can handle a 250 pounder? Thanks all in advance.
Here is a pic of the bike:

Those wheels cost $700 when they were new.
I would not ride on the wheels.

Are you being serious? What kind of wheels are they? Am I likely to break them? I will mainly be using the bike on a trainer year around and then 2-3 rides per week during the summers.

Ronius, those are some lightweight wheels. 16 spoke whereas most these days are 32 spokes or 36. If you break a spoke with 32 you can ride a while. With 16, if I broke a spoke, I'd stop riding.
I would have less concern about the frame than those wheels. It is possible that they are good strong wheels, but I'd do more research first.

Well, I can always get a new wheelset. What is your opinion on the frame?

I personally wouldn't have any concerns about the bike, except, as stated, the wheels.
Not only is the extremely low spoke count an issue, but look at how tight each position has 2 spokes. By putting those two spokes so close together, there is less metal around each spoke and I would be truly concerned about them cracking. My wife has that design, albeit with a higher spoke count, and I fully plan on replacing her wheels sooner than later.
IF THE BIKE FITS (most important aspect of buying a bike), then I'd buy it, sell the wheels and use that money to put toward new wheels. You could spend $300 for a decent set, $600 for a very nice set, or anywhere above that for awesome.

is Sub $500 a pretty good deal? It is in excellent shape. Original owner. But it is a 10 year old bike. I planned on putting my own bomb proof wheels on it anyways but i'm just more concerned about the rear carbon fiber on the frame. The owner keeps telling me the only thing carbon fiber is the fork but I keep pointing out the rear carbon fiber piece and he's not comprehending what i'm talking about. I've had a few Ultegra bikes in the past but never a Dura Ace so i'm kinda looking forward to it. Thanks everybody. From what you guys are telling me, it seems the frame should be okay.

how tall are you? over 6ft 3?
If you do get it, you can get some Vuelta wheels for 200ish
Vuelta Corsa Pro Road Wheelset - Wheels & Wheelsets
Vuelta Corsa HD Road Wheelset - Wheels & Wheelsets
Plus add another $50-100 for a saddle.

Jeez,
those even look like straight pulls...
Maybe cross 1?
Break a spoke on a 16 with light rims, you'd be likely you don't stop god awful fast...

Solid advice on the bikes and the wheels - I wouldn't ride those things unless I was 160 or under. But the bike looks nice. Parts compatibility no problem, 10 speed Shimano hubs are backwards compatible with 9 and 8 speed cassettes (gears). 7 speed will even work on a 10 speed hub with a 4.5 mm spacer.

Naw .. that's cool, asking car-related questions on bike formus often leads to issues, I just thought it was nice looking Boxter.
Onto the original topic, I totally agree, that was a nice bike, and the OP scored in grabbing it. The funny thing is I did a similar purchase .. nice used bike with 16 spoke wheels, and I weighed at the time 195#. I managed to crack the rear rim at the eyelets within 200 miles. I wish I had sold the wheels before I learned the hard way that these wheels were for lighter folks!
