New to me 29er and I have some CLyde questions

New to me 29er and I have some CLyde questions

I have yet to ride a bicycle outside since I broke my back 3 years ago. I've been pretty close to riding a 1989 Trek 950 I pieced together, but haven't finished. Well, it is but needs brake pads.

I was recently given a Performance Bike Access XCL9R that I believe was built up from a frame as a project.

It arrived today and needs a good cleaning. I got a teenager involved in cycling 21 years ago, and he still rides today. He bought a new bike and INSISTED I take this bike. He is just trying to kickstart my existing desire to ride... Sort of returning the favor, he says.

It has an interesting mix of components, but appears to be in good shape, just needs a cleaning. It uses a Shimano SORA set of STI shifters on cyclocross drop bars, uses a Shimano SLX rear der. and a SRAM X5 front. He added Origin8 brake levers to the flats. The wheels are Bontrager and are setup for tubeless, but the front is still tubed right now. And uses Avid BB5 discs front and rear.

As a Clyde, the brake rotors are 185mm front and 160 rear. Are these a good size with the 29 wheels? Is there something bigger? How often do rotors need to be changed and I'm guessing that I'll know when pads are ready to be changed?

This bike is lighter than the Gary Fisher HooKooEKoo I recently gave to my son. It was a fun bike but I couldn't even look at it anymore. And it wasn't even the bike I crashed on... I was looking at 29ers before my crash, but hadn't committed to anything yet. Right now, this bike won't be used to its capabilities anytime soon. As I need to defeat my fears just to even ride on flat ground. But that will be very soon. I'm scared, but I am really looking forward to this...

The size of the brake rotor is adequate. 185/160 mm rotors are the de facto standard for mountain biking. I have 203mm on a couple of my bikes because I got confused about the size and I have 185mm on another bike. I really can't tell the difference.

There are a couple of things on this bike that you may want to change. If you are going to ride it on the road and keep the drop bars, I'd suggest ditching the suspension fork and going with narrower tires for road use. I don't usually suggest that since I like to keep mountain bikes as mountain bikes and use them for off-road riding but in this case I'd make an exception. You might also want higher gearing on the front (a 48 tooth cog) since you'll spin out the 44/11 combination at a relatively low speed.

On the other hand, if you plan on riding off-road, I'd suggest ditching the drops. Drop bars off-road can be challenging. They push you forward over the nose of the bike and make the bike more difficult to handle on downhills. In some cases they can be downright scary. But if you ditch the drops, you'll need shifter, brake levers and, likely, new brake calipers due to the difference in lever pull. You might be able to use a dual cantilever/v-brake lever set to cantilever but I can't say with certainty that it would work.

So just clean it and lube the chain. Put some air in the tires and pedal. The rotors will be just fine, those are the sizes I use on my 2 -29ers. I have never worn out a rotor. So the front has a tube and the rear is tubeless? Do you know how add sealant? It seems you have some concerns getting back on the horse. Take it to a good bike mechanic and have them give it once over. Have them check the brake pads and tell them about the tube issues. Drop bar, this is for road?

He had the bike setup for sandy trails with few rocks and pavement. This is probably how I will ride. Years ago I had a few MLB that I slipped drop bars on. Took safety levers off the cheap DiaComp brakes and bolted some Mtb friction shifters to them. So drops are sort of familiar to me. Albeit, years in my past.

I'm a fairly competent mech myself just needing to learn a few new to me things. The front tire is tubeless ready just needs the juice and the valve stem. Thanks for the info on the brakes. Gearing just isn't important just yet. Years ago I did run a touring triple on one of my MTB s including a 53 tooth big ring. I'm not that animal anymore. So I'll work with the gearing I currently have.

So yes. Clean it and go ride it.
Just need to defeat my fears.

I think you'll like it just fine if it fits. I found my 29er far more enjoyable to street ride than my 26er. However, the reach can be stunning, being too stretched out on a 29er is not a fun ride.

Previous owner is 6'1". I'm 6'3" and have a little longer arm than he does. So the reach ought to be OK. Getting a helmet today and doing some soul searching...

Bigger wheels tend to roll better, case in point. My Roller Blades came with 72mm wheels, I put 80mm wheels and sand and rubble on the MUPs were easier to roll over. I miss roller blading... Since breaking my back, this is one more thing I'll never do again.

Better picture of the new to me 29er. Yeah still dirty from the previous owner's last ride.


And, it rides nice. I will clean it and get it to fit me a bit better. Holy cow that seat is hard!!!

I'm 4 days from my 3 year anniversary of my crash. I'm an emotional freak of nature right now. I have that first very short ride behind me. And now I can look forward to more. But I'm still racked with fear and believe that is going to be with me for some time to come.

I put quite a few miles on the 29er through the end of October. All flat. My old bike handling skills aren't coming back like I expected. Probably somewhere between fear and my memory loss. I finally got the seat height and bar angles comfortable. I had to toss a tube in the rear, and surprisngly haven't had a rash of flats. The bike rides fast actually, something I hadn't expected. I need to finish the old Trek 950 I have to work more on my handling skills. It is a bit smaller. Fell ill in November and kept a bad cough till the end of January. Very few miles on my indoor trainer, riding the bike I crashed on. My legs are ok, but not comfortable spinning yet. My lungs are getting better. But I find myself wanting this bike also, back on the road... Joined with a no drop group, and will start riding with them next week, I hope. A friend wants to ride the 35 mile section of a 100 mile Grand Fondo. I hope to be able to. Time is irrelavent. The drop bar 29er will suffice...

it took some time to get used to the drop bars and brifters. But this is a fun bike to ride. Faster than I was originally comfortable with. I still am not real fast and haven't gone more than 7 miles on it. I did put a tube back in the rear tire when the stem failed. I will go tubeless with the next tires I put on it.

I just added Wahoo Blue SC speed and cadence sensor, and a bluetooth heart rate monitor sensor as well. But didn't get to ride with them yet. But use the same on my roadbike on the trainer.

I'd say ignore your fear but obviously that's not going to happen, so just acknowledge it and power through. Riding a bike is... well, like riding a bike.

I've never seen road bars that flare out that much! Interesting. It looks like an extra-sturdy cross bike, so you could probably ride that thing just about anywhere and have fun on it.

Those look like Salsa 'Woodchipper' off road drop bars. They offer multiple hand positions but are very different from standard drop bars, IME.

If you are riding on nothing rougher than gravel roads, get some 700X35 or so road tires.

Yes. Woodchippers. Trying to get past my fears sucks, but I have managed a couple small hills. Invigorating yet terrifying. I want to get on easy trails when it gets drier. So the 29x2.1s stay. I do want to get my roadbike out soon though, ditched the 23s for 28s. Soon. Soon.

edit... 28s don't fit the front of my roadbike. Nice.

I LOVE this bike. But, a buddy has decided to try cyclocross and wants me to ride with him. I won't race, and not sure what sort of trails he has in mind. But the Slant Six and Small Block 8 tires ought to be a good ride for whatever trails he wants to ride. Or, do I switch to a 700x38 tire? Will the wider tires hinder or help compared to my buddy on his CX specific bike...

I have been back on my Cannondale I wrecked on, but it is back on the trainer for the winter and I replaced the 700x23s with 25s. I tried to fit 28s, but there wasn't enough room on the 1998 Cannondale R200.

I even considered my freshly refurbed and modified 1986 KHS, 5600 series Shimano 105 brifters and derailuers. And 700 conversion. I WANTED to roll 700x32s, but they were a tight fit in the chainstays, and wouldn't fit the crown of the fork at all.

I recently purchased a 1990 Trek 7000 that might be a good choice for chasing my buddy as well. Although I bought this bike for keeping at work... We have a group trying to get some lunch rides in...

The young man the sent it to me rode it in the desert around Phoenix. It took some getting used to, but feels pretty good. And, having similar position between this and my road bikes is nice. That Trek 7000 might get drop bars and brifters too.

It's a pretty sweet bike, I'm glad you're warming up to it.

I have a friend that shattered a collarbone in a crowded charity ride accident, many surgeries, over a year living injured, it was awful. He has a lot of fear riding in groups or downhill now too. (I joke that we should go out on a ride together with 1 car and 1 bike. He can ride the bike uphill for me, and I'll ride it down for him!)

Getting past the mental block will take time. You seem motivated, all I can advise is take life at your own pace. Set incremental goals maybe. Push yourself only as you feel comfortable, don't let others push you.

I am still having issues with hills. And the thought of a group, not yet.

I should be able to take a fall or two. But, my head isn't wrapped around that yet.
