Did something fun on the bike today - Sprint Triathlon Relay

I got invited to a cool deal today. A friend of mine called me yesterday and said they were doing a Sprint Triathlon today in my little town and that he was doing a relay with another guy and their cycling guy dropped out. He asked if I wanted to give it a try so, I said what the heck. I'm just a recreational rider, never really push myself and definitely had never done anything like a triathlon before. So I wasn't sure what to expect.

The cycling leg was only 17 miles. That's about my daily ride, so I figured I could do that. He was it was going to be slow pace, but once we got there, there were several people on full tri bikes and I started getting worried After the swim, they pinned the back number on me and I took off. A few folks were ahead of me. Surprising to me, I ran them down and passed them. There was one guy on a tri bike ahead of me and I finally caught and passed him after a couple of miles.

About 4 miles in 3 serious looking tri bike guys passed me. I tried to keep up for a while, but there pace was too much for me. Then about 7-8 miles in, a woman eased passed me. She was only going just a little faster than I was, so I just locked in behind her and used her to motivate me to go faster. We stayed tight with each other for about 8 miles. No one else passed us. About 15 miles in, she got fatigued on a hill and I passed her and stayed ahead of her until the end.

I had just bought a new Garmin Edge 1000 computer and it worked great on my first outing, but yesterday, I went to the bike shop and had some more sensors added to my second bike. I didn't realize beforehand that I had to tell it which sensors to use, so the only thing I got from it during the ride was current speed and heart rate. My heart rate stayed between 164-174 bpm the whole ride it seemed like. I wasn't sure if that was good or band.

I ended up coming in third out of 50 or so bikes on the cycling leg. After the woman finished, I asked her what average speed her computer was showing and she said 19.1 MPH. I ended up ahead of her, so I figure I was averaging around that speed, which is WAY faster than I've ever gone on a ride before. Apparently, I just need someone to push me.

Also, I am in freakin' love with this new Roubaix! I've put about 163 miles on it since I got it a week ago. Wish I would have bought this thing sooner!

All in all, it was a blast. I'd love to do it again.

Coming through on lap #2 :

OK, it looks like you narrowly escaped rule #42 by not doing the swim or the run:

RULE 42:

A bike ride/race shall never be preceeded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
