I can't wait to get my new bicycle. I'm hoping by the end of year that I will lose about 200 pounds.. thanks everyone for their great ideas and which bicycles I should get.

Big congrats! That is a great start! I very clearly remember my first ride so many many years ago.... i went ONE MILE and i thought i was going to DIE!! I was so discouraged i almost threw my bicycle away! Yeah, it was that ugly... but i stuck with it and by the end of summer i was riding centuries!!!

I have to say though... losing 200 pounds, while is a noble goal may not be a very realistic goal... it's great to have a long term goal, like losing 200 pounds, but i would set a more short term, realistic goal... ;)

Yendor72 01-16-15 01:39 PM

Great job, keep at it.

I too started slow and not so steady. That first mile was killer but I knew it was the right thing to do.

I also agree that smaller short term goals are important. For example, mine today is just to get back on the bike when I get home. I have been sick this week (I'm never sick) and not 100% and skipped the spin bike last night and now I feel super guilty about it. Goal today is to get on it, nothing else.

ray.garza 01-16-15 01:46 PM

High-Five! Great Job!! Be sure to set a weekly goal for you to shoot for. Keep hem wheels spinning :)

200lbs in a year is not impossible when you're starting from a high weight. I've lost 175lbs in the last year without surgery, but I weighed 407 to start with.

Most of the weight loss will come from restricting calorie intake though, rather than from exercise.

Agree, it's not impossible... heck i've lost 75 pounds in 4 1/2 months... however for most people such drastic, quick weight loss tends to be short lived.... again, i'm not saying it can't be done... just that when you look at a wide group of people and the statistics, not the unique individual's results...

congrats on your weight loss!

salreus 01-16-15 02:43 PM

Awesome. that's about double the distance of my first ride. The turn around is really quick once you get into it. Keep it up, good luck and keep us posted.

ravenv12 01-16-15 02:52 PM

and yes I know 200 pounds is a lot but I weigh 520 I do have a YMCA membership.I've actually been going there for a few months I have not in the last week and a half. Mainly because me and my wife only has one car she works almost 40 hours a week she's just started a new job I work about 30.I usually do about two miles on the exercise bike at the YMCA 4 miles on the treadmill.

since I have decided I want to change my life I have been eating more healthy portion control. Food prepping for the week.no more sodas no sweeties no juice unless I use my juicer if I drink tea unsweet tea.I drink mainly just water .

one of my goals is to be able to ride my bicycle 5 miles to the YMCA spend a couple hours of the YMCA and then ride 5 miles back.

ravenv12 01-16-15 02:54 PM

also if my spelling is not right it's because I'm using my cell phone speech to text..

Best of luck, 5 miles to the gym, a workout, then 5 miles home will be a great accomplishment.

Good job! My first ride as an adult was about a mile and half. Half block long hills at 2% grade were next to insurmountable.

ravenv12 01-16-15 04:35 PM

well the five miles there and five miles back would not be an everyday thing. I actually just did another two miles and bicycle decided to tell me to go F off.I had to walk about a mile home. so I think the bicycle is dead the whole back in came apart when I was breaking .bearings went everywhere. Almost threw me off the bike. it was garbage when I got it it was actually a waste of money but oh well. I will get a brand new one within a week or two or find a good used one this time...

bassjones 01-16-15 06:05 PM

Congrats on the progress. Take a HARD look at those links I posted in your other thread. Especially the Specialized. That's a darn good bike. Much better than anything you'll get new at that price.

Captlink 01-16-15 06:49 PM

Walk a little now bike allot more later.Great start keep it up!
Its a shame your not closer I'm tying to learn how to turn a wrench.

chrism32205 01-16-15 08:40 PM

I followed your original thread. I'm glad you got something to ride.

Deciding to make the change is the first step to losing weight. It may take awhile and you'll have some ups and downs but you can do it. :thumb:

MacNasty 01-16-15 09:54 PM

Congratulations!!!!!!!!! I remember my first ride after 35 years of not being on a bike. I hauled it in the back of my pickup truck to a parking lot. I was beat after the first 5 minutes. Keep after it and before long a 10 mile ride will be routine. I don't believe there is a better low impact exercise than biking, you get core, balance, cardio, legs, arms, and wind in your face at the same time along with changing scenery. Keep after it!

Good Job :thumb:

I made the same decision 2 years ago and in the beginning I was lucky to ride a couple of miles, since then I've done 2 centuries and lost almost 50 lbs.

Congrats on the good start.

Sullalto 01-17-15 08:18 PM

Best of luck. 200 is ambitious! I've lost 60-100 lbs in the past year(Don't know how much I weighed exactly), but it's been a trial.

My first ride was 5 miles, at a slower pace than you. I had to stop and rest twice. I threw up at the end. I'm literally over twice as fast for 10x the distance now, and finish feeling fine, just a sore ass. Riding every day does amazing things.

DTSCDS 01-21-15 10:11 AM

Like others have said, 200 pounds is a great goal, but it's a long term goal. You need to have some short term goals that you can knock out to see you are making progress.

You will find that you progress really quickly at first. Later, when you aren't progressing as much/as fast, you need those earlier 'wins' to keep moving ahead. If all you can see is how far away you still are from 200 pounds it is easy to get discouraged. But if you can see you have knocked out half a dozen smaller goals it is more motivating because of your visible progress.

And remember, a goal needs to be specific and easily measurable. (Google "SMART goals" for more details.)

salreus 01-21-15 12:30 PM

I agree about the goals. Chop them up into little pieces. If you want 200 lbs. So you are thinking 50 lbs by end of March. 100 lbs by end of June. 150 by end sept.

Darth Lefty 01-21-15 12:39 PM

Don't get discouraged, you are on the right path

Little Darwin 01-21-15 02:57 PM

Congratulations on your first ride. My first ride was less than a mile, and I laid my bike on the front lawn to rest before putting it away... The miles, and time in the saddle will increase with time. Don't worry if progress is slow. I know in another forum, it was suggested that increasing the mileage in a reasonable way is to add 10% more miles each week, but starting out so low, there will be weeks that you exceed that, helped by losing weight of course... but just as a rule of thumb to help you keep from overextending yourself, think of a small increase each week. It doesn't take all that long to get a 3 mile ride up to 10 miles if you increase a little bit every week.
