No cycling shorts on commute?
I'm wondering how many of you don't wear anything under your outer garments when commuting to work? I've been wearing liner shorts, thinking of trying without.
when i had a 15 mile one-way commute, i rode with cycling shorts.
now i have a short little 5 mile commute, so i don't bother with 'em. |
I wear underwear. Are you talking about going commando? I only wear my Nashbar padded short liners in lieu of regular underwear if I'm going to be riding much farther than usual. I don't use them on 30 mile days.
Like Steely Dan, my commute is only about 15 minutes each way, so to simplify my morning routine, I skip the padded liner. The same goes for recreational rides with my wife, unless they are longer than 10 miles or so - or unless I plan to sweat "down there" a lot.
For solo rides of five miles or more, I always wear liners, sometimes even a full padded bike short. benetga, how long is your commute? |
10 mi. RT-saddle not padded.
My commute is about 6 miles. I don't wear padded shorts for rides under 20 miles or so.
My commute is 10 miles each way, so I don't bother with padded shorts, unless I need to put a fresh pair on in the morning anyway. Otherwise, its whatever I slept in.
No..just regular clothes..
Sheepskin seat cover and a Kilt. how about Ewe?
I don't like unnecessary complications. My trips vary from 1 to 12 miles each way. All in normal clothes.
Since we're just sharing what we do, I typically wear thin merino boxer briefs under athletic shorts (or AmFib tights if it's cold/rainy out) for commuting. It's kind of rare that I actually do wear honest-to-goodness "bicycling shorts."
Like others, depends on the distance. My usual commute is 10 miles each way. At that distance I find that if the cargo isn't held firmly in place the sensitive bits get chafed from sliding around. I could possibly achieve similar results with tight fitting undies, but I wouldn't want to wear those all day either and bike shorts manage moisture better.
This is what I do also. I pack a fresh pair to change in to at the office.
Padded lycra type cylcing shorts over athletic underwear (not like protective athletic, just not cotton).
I've ridden a couple of times with looser running-type shorts and the wind blows them up like in the Marilyn Monroe poster. |
I don't need cycling shorts for my 18 mile roundtrip commute.. I wear camo cargo shorts with some athletic boxer briefs.
I do barely 2 miles each way, so it's just unpadded compression shorts under synthetic hiking shorts between me and my B67.
If I'm just riding directly between the house and the office, I'll just wear regular office clothes. Today being Friday, it's chinos and an oxford shirt. And regular underwear.
On the way home, I'm going to take a 20-25 mile detour, so I'm going to change into bibs and a jersey. |
I'm doing about 6 miles each way (12mile roundtrip), so I wear regular pants and a microfiber t-shirt. I show up a little early, do the 'towel bath' ritual, and change into a more appropriate shirt. Works fine for my short commute.
I wear nothing under my bibs :) .....24 miles each way, so there's no way I'd consider wearing anything but cycling specific clothing for the ride.
I wearing touring shorts to and from work. It's Florida and I end up having to change because of sweat anyway, so I change and hang up my clothes put them home for the trip home. Its 11.5 miles each way.

My commute averages about 6 miles each way. I wear lycra liner shorts under jeans in the winter and baggy shorts in the summer. I don't feel that I need the padding for such short trips, though. I wear them because they do a great job keeping things organised.
My commute is ~9 miles, in the summer I wear boxer briefs or loose knit boxers under soccer shorts and in the winter if it's dry I'll wear long underwear under soccer shorts (looks dumb but keeps me warm) and if it's wet I'll wear running tights.
I put on padded shorts and when it is cold I put my leg warmers on. It's a 10 mile each way commute, too long to wear my office clothes. I'd be drenched by the time I get to the office. I change when I get there.

About 25 miles a day. I do wear bike pants with chamois/padding.
