I talk (out loud) to myself quite a bit. I've found that I can sometimes only reason something through if I try to articulate it. For instance, in the bike overhaul class I just finished at the co-op I would find myself looking at, say, a shifter cable and saying something like "so, if you came out of this little hole, then you must go back in from the opposite direction. Right?" Okay, I guess that's talking to the cable more so than to myself, but you get the idea. I didn't realize I was doing this out loud until the class assistant pointed it out and said it had taken him a while to figure out that I wasn't talking to him. Anyway, I do something similar on the bike when approaching complicated intersections and the like.

Of course I do. the problem occurs when I argue with myself, then lose the argument.

I do talk to deer and rabbits though. My theory is they'll eventually get used to me and not panic, or at least hear me coming. Squirrels don't listen and aren't worth the trouble.

I don't talk to myself, I'm almost always listening to podcasts, so other people are talking to me. Sometimes I laugh out loud.
Whenever I run out of podcast and have to turn to music, I listen to the only music I store permanently on my mp3 player, which is Bach's Goldberg Variations, Glenn Gould (his iconic original recording: 70s?). I can't help singing along with that -- and neither can he, he is quite audible at some points in the recording

Nope. The chatterbox ghosts that follow me everywhere won't let me get a word in edgewise.

Do I talk to myself on my commute?
I'm not sure, do I?
Why yes, I think you do. Sometimes anyway.
Really!!? I wasn't aware of that.
That's what I'm here for.

I always greet the cows, sometimes comment on the ride, and yep, I sing. Sometimes whatever earworm's digging through my grey matter, but mostly this, whip sound effects optional. Because I'm a nerd. And it's a cool song.

Of course. How else could I get any intelligent conversation?

yes!
i also talk to motorists who do jerky things, and other people, mostly to communicate. "bicycle behind you" "on your left" or whatever else.
practice being vocal and you will have no problem saying things so others can you when the occasion calls for it. IME most cyclists say things either too fast or too softly or not at all. that is wrong. i'm a big believer in announcing your presence, regardless of whether the person can see you or not (pedestrians and motorists often don't see cyclists) and esp. if the person ahead can't see you.

The monologue in my head is usually about how crazy I am to be out on a bike with all the distracted drivers and how this is going to be my last commute-by-bike ever. But that goes away the next morning.

Yes to talking and singing.

Yes, otherwise there's a good chance I'll go through the day without any intelligent conversation.

Today, while pedaling home as fast as possible, my brain was calculating the temperature in Celsius for a 75 F day. I came up with 24 C. Which is pretty damned close as it's actually 23.89.

I talk to myself internally. But often my conversation is like that of a parent on the telephone..."What a beautiful da...whoa! Watch that broken bottle...man, the sky is really clear today. And when I tackle a climb, I talk to my bike as if he did all the work "Good climb, Henry! We only got one more hill and we are home free". Until I hit the zone and then my thoughts quiet and I really start to see everything. Strange, I guess, but it's something I really enjoy about commuting to and from work. It seems restorative.

Who doesn't? I think it'd be more weird if you didn't talk to yourself at least once.
But I also talk to passersby, and idiots in cars, and the world at large when stupid crap happens like when the path is flooded and you have to turn around and backtrack.
But I also listen to music so I sing a bit too.

No, I tend to like knowing the C for no other reason than that I am somewhat of a geek. I have the obvious benchmarks in my head:
0C is 32, 10 is 50, 20 is 68, etc.
So, from there, I know it's 9 degrees F for every 5 C. Working out the exact number is where the exercise comes in. But, I can't do decimals in my head very well, at least not with any more precision than 1/4 fractions.
Sometimes I think of ex girlfriends and wives while I ride. Ranking them in order: Best legs, best boobs, prettiest face, best over all package, best talent...

Wives?
I think I feel sorry, I am not sure I could do multiple wives.
I also do math in my head. I like to practice long division and big number multiplication.
I will certainly talk to myself about things; watch out for this guy, pedal harder, come on you can catch this guy, okay coast you won't make this light, those types of things.
When I used to swim in HS and university I used to talk to myself, in Spanish. I used to have practice conversations all through HS which really helped me learn the language. I also used to think through my research and it helped me to structure my approaches and clarify my conclusions.

I occasionally talk out loud while I am riding to record my thoughts or information about what is occurring around me in traffic so that the microphones in my HD action cameras may have a record of events as I witness them in the event of a crash or other incidents. I have verified that both of them are capable of recording my voice in an understandable manner for later playback.
