Without a Cell Phone
Anyone else commute without a cell phone? I hate those things. I don't own a cell phone. Calls. Texts. Likes. Emails. Sheesh. I ride 11.5 miles one way without a cell phone. Sorta like living in the 80's!

Except for all your forum threads.

Yeah, it's horrible having help a call away, being able to look up directions anytime, communicating with family and friends wherever and whenever....
Why would anyone want a cell phone? |

It seems I am once again the voice of the unpopular. I know most people love cell phones. I hate 'em. Most people use Facebook, Twitter, LikeMeNow, etc. I hate social media. Ironically, I do realize this forum is basically social media. |
Cats, cat poop, cellphones, anything else you don't like?
Do you at least like commuting? My cell phone helped record a motorist who tried to run me over twice, got out of his car and assaulted me, and wrecked my bike. The phone allowed me to take photos of this, and let me call 911. I captured his license plate when he took off and they arrested him in his home within 30 minutes of the altercation. He was charged with assault with a weapon X2, assault, mischief to property X 2. With the evidence against him, he plead guilty sparing a trial. I keep my cell phone handy at all times now. |

Yes. And they are many. But none posted from a cell phone.

Many people are able to control their cellphone instead of letting it control them. The off button is particularly handy. |
I've never had a cell phone, so no, I don't commute with one. Doesn't make me any better than anyone else... there are plenty of other reasons for that!

Interesting philosophy, this hatred of an inanimate object.

Youth in Asia was a fun play on words for an 80s punk band, for sure, also the fictional magazine Billy Chaka worked for in the Isaac Adamson novels. As some kind of obscure alias here on BF, not so much. There are old people here, ya know... |

Good to know I'm not the only CRAZY one who dares to ride without a cell.

But without Facebook, how will you learn about the video of a cat playing chopsticks with chopsticks?!?
I like phones: Keeping in touch with the wife and kids is essential. And the camera quality on phones is good enough that I rarely use a real SLR camera anymore. I like social media: Around here, Facebook groups are a great way to meet up with others for a ride or run. I also get to see what cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends that don't live close by are up to. Sometimes I turn my phone off for my commute (perhaps if the battery was getting low). Other times I have made calls and even texted while I ride, but only on a slow, neighborhood street (don't start flaming me). |
Rode without a cell phone for many years, I now love my cellphone. I can listen to music, can order food ahead of time and have it ready for me, can call for help when I needed, talk to people I want to talk to, just to name a few things I love about it.

Many? That's a tremendous overstatement. Seems that virtually everyone who has a smart phone becomes controlled by their smart phone.
By the way, let's no be moving the goalposts. Your first post stated cellphone, now you mention smartphone. Either way, surely you have enough spine to not let a little hunk of plastic control you? |

And there are other people who use bicycles for commuting and it is their only transportation, who do not have many material possessions, but not by choice, or for earning New Age Space Cadet Brownie Points on "social media." But these bicyclists are probably not posting their exploits on BF.
So what? |
NEVER! Help is a call away which is important to me for my longer rides. I also record my rides using GPS on phone. Turn the stupid ringer off and ignore all the call/texts until you are done with the ride, isn't that just as easy********************??

You're amusing. In a "look at me! look at me!" kinda way.

I turn my cell phone off during commutes because I know where I'll be and when, so anything can wait awhile.
For commuting it's in my backpack and no real addition to the load, but for a recreational ride it's just one more thing in my jersey pocket. I wish we could decide which device to use as we move on to newer phones. I'd love to be able to use my little old flip phone when riding. |

LOL!!! Almost chocked at lunch reading that quote, brilliant! |
