Any objective difference?
 

After much forum perusing, debating, and test riding I've narrowed down the bike I want to get to the CAADX 105 ($1450) and the Trek CrossRip LTD ($1600).

With the price points so close it's hard to make a choice. I like both of them equally in terms of ride. I prefer the look of the stock LTD bike more, but I usually personalize my ride with vinyl tape and the like anyways. The LTD one at the shops comes with brakes on the hoods, which is definitely useful for when I'm in casual cruising mode (80+ mile bike rides require some form relaxation and I do rides like that fairly often) but it's nothing I can't just get on the CAADX nor is it that crucial as I can brake fine from the hoods by the top of the brakes.

Is there anything objectively / on paper better about either bike? Any personal experience?

(This is in commuting because I'm not using these bikes for cyclocross racing, though when I'm not commuting with this bike I'm gonna be having fun time in the dirt)

Do you mean in-line brakes on the bars? My wife just got a cannondale and they installed those for her for $45 (I think the parts were $45, no labor charge for a new bike).

Have you taken them on a long ride? My wife did a lot of shopping for that cannondale but never took any bike out for more than 20 minutes. I would want to ride one for an hour...

I've taken them out both for 30 minutes. Some of these LBS allow rentals maybe I can see if I can rent each for 2 hours and take them about.

But let's say then I still can't decide. Anything about either that sticks out more than the other that may prove "better?" Frame geometry? Components? Etc.

Comparing geometry between the crossrip and the caad

The crossrip has a longer wheelbase, a little more trail, and a longer head tube. I would say that the geometry of the crossrip is meant to give you a little more stability than the caad at the price of agility. Whether this would actually make any difference to you in practice is unknown, it's not like the differences are very big. I'm thinking you can't go wrong either way.

Assuming these are coming from different dealers, you could play one against the other to see who will give you the best price, throw in extras, etc.

Sorry, I just don't think there will be anything glaring enough at that price level to make one clearly "better" than the other. Going by just the photo's I would pick the CAADX. I've always liked the look of Cannondales. More so in the 80's when they were the only bikes with big tubes and upright geometry. Even now you can plainly see much less slope to the top tube of the CAADX than the LTD. This should be fine as long as you get fitted properly. FWIW.

Top Mount Brake Levers are not difficult to add if you want them and the Box-Stock bike does not have them.

Your LBS can probably do that at Point of sale , as well as being The best time to add accessories.

Thanks guys, both very helpful. The stability I can see being nice on my long ride days, while the agility I can see being nice in transversing the hectic city or trails-not-much-travelled through the woods. But like you said, the differences are probably minute enough where it'd probably not be too noticeable.

Time to pit these LBSs against each other.
