KMC X series chains (X-8 , X-9 etc. depending on number of sprockets) are very long lasting.

Also SRAM 70 series (PC-870, PC-970, PC-1070 and so on). 50 series are not that good, and more expensive series are just better looking, not longer lasting.

You're off by one series there. At least in the 8-speed domain, the PC-830 wears quickly, but the 850 and up enjoy a good long lifespan, the only differences being cosmetic.

the chain on my commuter is dead after about 4 months. There is a link that is tight, and it refuses to loosen up. I'm annoyed by that. Fortunately 8 speed chains are pretty cheap. I imaging changing it every year is called for, I think 4 months is a manufacturing problem. Thanks SRAM

Time should be independent of use. I get more mileage from a chain. Perhaps u just had a bad one?
