After passing him, I wished I had scraped him up. Maybe he could have survived if he could just get off the road. But it was too late for me to turn back.
Thank goodness snakes that bite are extremely rare around here in the northeast US. The most common snakes seem to be black snakes. We have milk snakes and garter snakes, too. Black snakes are big, and we've had them come through the house! Even knowing how they're harmless, I have to confess that they are quite a jolt to the nervous system to see them inside!

I have a friend that says he sees rattlesnakes all the time, he just rides right over them, thump thump. They can only strike when coiled, when they're stretched out across a trail they don't have time to react to an oncoming bike.
I wonder though, that must destroy a bunch of ribs, and does it end up killing the snake, or can they survive?

No seat. I bet the seatpost broke, the owner couldn't stand to ride it all the way home, so he threw it into the bushes hoping it was an inconvenient enough location to prevent anybody from taking it for a few hours, got home somehow, and came back in a car to pick it up.
Also the fork is installed backwards.

Me thinks the fork and handlebars are just twisted and the rear wheel is out of the dropout.

To be honest, it was a small one (one year, we had an infestation of them along IH35 due to new home construction) and it was either dying or dead already. Didn't notice the puncture until about 1/2 mile down the road, so no venom if there ever was any.

Our local trail museum regularly had a local rattlesnake. Our neighbor said he had them in a rock pile behind his house that would split when he used one of the rocks for target practice.

That's what it looks like to me, also. The seat frame is still there, so the seat post is probably good. The rear dropout looks like it might be damaged, but I can't tell for sure.

I thought about taking it home but I was about 8 miles from home and no access to a car, also I have too many bikes as it is.
I'm sure it was abandoned by a homeless person they camp next to the trail allot. I come across allot of old abandoned magnas and roadmaster mountain bikes oh yeah and also next brand mountain bikes.

Ben there are rattlers and other poisonous snakes, but they're not common. At least I like to think so.

We have rattlesnakes here in Michigan. They're a different species (eastern massauga rattlesnakes). They are pretty solitary though. I know they have been found within a mile or two of my house, but apart from looking at them in cardboard boxes where people have caught them to relocate them off their property, I've never seen one.

Found someone's electric bill today. Stamped, addressed, and ready to return, on the ground between the street and the bike path. It was crushed and dirty, but dry, so must have fallen since last night's rain. I dropped it into a mailbox and felt virtuous.
