Heat Wave
A massive heat wave is gripping most of the country. What is it like where you are at and are you still riding in this high heat?
|
It reached 100 here in CT today, 98 or so yesterday. I haven't been riding yet this week.

Current conditions at
Sacramento, Sacramento Executive Airport (KSAC) Lat: 38.50694°NLon: 121.495°WElev: 20ft. Fair 104°F 40°C Humidity 12% Wind Speed W 8 MPH Barometer 29.82 in (1009.8 mb) Dewpoint 41°F (5°C) Visibility 10.00 mi Heat Index 99°F (37°C) Last update 29 Jul 3:53 pm PDT But as we like to say, it's a dry heat. It's pretty typical July weather for Sacramento. If you keep moving and keep drinking, it's really not that bad. |
We've been going through hot, and nice spells, riding a motorcycle offers no relief from the heat so I still ride my bike.
|
Just typical summer weather here, upper 80s and humid. I find 90 degree temps in Colorado, for instance, much more comfortable than 80 degree temps in the Great Lakes area, due to the difference in humidity.
|
It was 94F this past weekend, I did a 133 mile ride with 9000 feet of climbing. Mostly did 30-50 mile rides this week with temps in the mid 90's although I wimped out and rode the trainer today (intervals) because I could not bear doing hill repeats in this temperatures and the unhealthful air alerts.

Scottsdale, Arizona here.
Commuting to class at 9am has put me in high 80s - mid 90s territory. By noon on the commute back it's usually 110+. This has been for the past month or so. The afternoon ride can get to you, but I'm usually equipped with enough hydration to get through. |

And the low humidity makes summertime a breeze here. |
Yes I rode to work today. At around 2pm it was 101 with about 40% humidty for a 104 heat index. Good thing I created my own breeze.
|
Typical summer weather locally. Warm and muggy some days, other days pretty nice (low 80's).
High humidity has made it uncomfortable here and there but no really really hot days this year so far. Nothing that would keep me from riding, but I've never left the bike home because of hot weather. |
It was hot and humid today as usual, but I'm acclimated, so it doesn't make much difference. I just make sure to stay well hydrated before and during the ride. Thunderstorms are the only concern this time of year, and it sometimes takes a bit of good timing and luck to avoid them. Also backing off the pace a couple mph helps.

Boston, 85-90 F+, I use a 3/4 pace with lots of water and gatorade, plus a swim break half way home, nice.
|
In Phoenix, my morning commute is mid 80s F. So far my commute home around 4ish PM hasn't hit 110 F locally. Mostly 103-108 F.
I realize the airport has hit 110 F a time or two. But this is a fairly mild summer here seems to me. |
Coming home yesterday it was a pleasant 88F when I left and 78F at home (closer to water). 65 this morning.
|
Heat index, with our high relative humidity, has been over 100f for a couple weeks, and doesn't show any sign of letting up next week, save for the thunderstorms that roll through. It's actually not that bad until I get off the bike; even in high humidity the relative breeze is enough to keep me reasonably cool. My tri singlet is helping get a nice tan, as well.
|
Typical summer weather, might have hit 100F the other day. Rode the bike home, how else was I supposed to get there? I'm a bike commuter!
|
Seacoast MA/NH/ME. Yesterday was 90degF with high humidity. I added 2 mi to my return trip commute for total commuting mileage of 30mi.
Felt great. I stopped for an iced coffee on the return trip, which really hit the spot, sat outside in the weather rather than inside in the air conditioning. Otherwise, whenever I'm tempted to curse the heat/humidity, I flash back to this past Winter and tell myself to STFU and enjoy the heat. |
This week has been in the low 90s, with afternoon clouds and/or rain showers knocking it down to upper 80s. Not too bad, especially once the constant 15mph breeze kicks in on my ride. A high dew point (70F) makes it pretty rough, but I just ride on.
It was worse earlier this month and in late June with 96+ temps in the afternoon. And to answer the question, temps are not preventing any rides, but a thunderstorm may do so. |
I'm close to the Pacific Ocean , but it's gonna be toasty today .. 80F @ 10am..
Retired, the Pub has AC :thumb: |

High 90°'s with +10° heat index, high humidity. Afternoon/evening thunderstorms. It ain't called Hotlanta for nuthin'.
|
We had one of the hottest Junes on record. July has been a little cooler but more humid, making it just as bad or worse. The temperature right now is 93 F but the heat index is 103 and it will probably go up some more. The temperature and humidity today are typical for July around here. For that reason, summer is my least-favorite season. You can't do anything outdoors without getting drenched in sweat after a few minutes.
|
Triple digits here. Was going to ride until I saw that. The last few times I mucked about when it was that hot I did not have an enjoyable time. Tomorrow we have a predicted high of 93 and morning showers. Perfect day for a commute!
|
High 80s here. I still ride, but my pace is significantly lower.
|
96 today in Seattle, but of course I'm still riding. 150 miles last week and just passed 100 miles today.
I'm temporarily car free while the body shop fixes the damage some idiot who broadsided me caused, so I don't have that much choice in the matter :) |
