FWIW, there is both a Training & Nutrition and a Racing subforum.

There is really no right or wrong when it comes to commuting speed. Ride at whatever speed you want.

I have several: 1) Hang your platform feeder in an area that does not provide cover for house cats to ambush attack the birds. B) Hang you platform feeder at least 4' from the ground. III) Provide a sufficient supply of sunflower seeds 4) Ride your bicycle however to please on any given day. E) Provide a sufficient supply of clean water for birds & bicycle riders in separate containers. -Bandera |

On my way home this evening at 20 mph, I saw plenty of wildlife. A few deer and many frogs. I think a couple frogs didn't make it out of my way, unfortunately. |
I'm not a racer... but I usually try not to go slow, as I'm having to catch my train in time, I always think I'll be too late at the railway station. So I don't slow down...
However, with my photographers eye, I like to look around, watch things I wouldn't see when I would do the same route by car. That's why I don't race... I feel like I'm an inbetweener ;) And aswel, a race is a competition, and it's never a fair competition because everyone has another bike with another weight. My commuterbike is quite heavy, and sometimes some old dude rides by I cannot follow, seems he's cycling with an electric bike :( ! |
No racing or training for me. I like to ride bikes, mountain bike and bike tour. Some of my " commutes "involve 8-10 miles of dirt and 2-3 hours of time going home. All good.

I generally like to go fast. Often I'm very much within my own head and not paying a lot of attention to what's around me other than being aware of traffic, obstacles, etc.
Other times I'm looking at everything and every one or I might become fixated on the rain or snow being thrown off my front tire. I can be going 20+ mph and still stop to take a pic. It's not really about speed exactly though if I'm late and in a hurry, I'm less likely to do that kind of thing. My route to work hasn't changed in years and there's very little on my commute I haven't seen a thousand times before. But whether I'm going fast or slow, I can still appreciate my surroundings if I'm in that frame of mind. |
Another way to combine training and commuting: leave work, join the local weeknight group ride, ride home.

Barney Fife's cardinal rules:
1. Obey all rules. 2. Do not write on the walls, because it takes a lot of work to clean writing of the walls. |
Going fast is kinda nice. I see plenty of the morning when I am going 20mph – anything beats being encapsuled in a car. I do ride through a couple of parks where I slow it down to leisurely 16-17mph and smell the morning air.
Then again, there is a nice quarter mile stretch where I ride in traffic at 30mph for a jolt of energy. I did get smart and take the spedo off of my bike so I can just ride whatever pace I’m in the mood for. But 20mph takes me ½ an hour and I’m not that interested in riding 10mph for an hour each way. |
