What A Difference A Day Makes

Think about this that day you wake up and are feeling too lazy to ride to work...

It's been a long run of great weather, so I have cycled to work about 15 days in a row. This morning, I had to deliver a large package to a client 15 miles away before work, so I had to take my car. Now I am sitting at my desk MISERABLE and sad, not having that ride at the end of the day to look forward to.

Skipping a day definitely takes the steam out of me. I am usually cheery and full of energy all day long. Right now, I just want to take a nap!

The weird thing for me is, most days, I don't feel like bike commuting. But every time I do it, I'm extremely glad I did. Maybe my craving will increase when I finish building my upright handlebar bike.

I don't mind missing an isolated day, which happens frequently due to my aversion to riding in thunderstorms. But I get pretty antsy if I have to miss 2 or more days in a row. I do make a point of catching up as necessary/feasible on weekends (i.e. workout/pleasure rides). But if I have 5 clear weekdays, I like to take Wednesday off and go for a run at lunchtime instead. For that matter, on days that I miss due to T-storms I often go for a lunchtime run also.
My commute, BTW, is about 11 miles one-way, semi-rural, so nowhere to duck out of a thunderstorm over most of the distance.

Like old's'cool I don't mind missing a day here and there. It happens a good bit for me because I often have mid-day, off-campus meetings with community partners and don't have time to get to the meeting and back to campus without being late for something. I don't like those days, though, and feel a little sluggish. If it happens two days in a row, I get really antsy and make sure to take a short spin just for the fun of it when I get home.

That is funny, I feel exactly the same way. I'm closing in on 3000 miles of commuting for the year and maybe one day a month I got up excited to do it. But like you said, I am always glad I did, never regret it. I have regretted some of the times I drove when I could have ridden, however.

I try to ride every day but don't sweat it if I need to drive due to weather, work requirements, etc. Sometimes when we get extended periods of nice weather, I need to take a day off just to give my legs a break. I try to avoid riding in thunderstorms, but it's a tough call in summer when afternoon storms can crop up almost any day. I rolled the dice yesterday and won. The forecast called for about 40% chance of afternoon storms and they hit about 3 pm, but had passed by when it was time to head home. My commute takes 1-1:15 hours depending on red lights, traffic and the weather, so I don't like riding that far in storms with lightning, high winds, hail and heavy rain. In fact, I don't like riding any distance in storms.
