I am thinking of trading in my commuter for a Scott sub 10. I tried one in the bike shop yesterday and they look ideal for commuting in the city. I am not sure how heavy they are but just by picking it up it felt quite light (edit 10.9 kg). Much lighter than my current commuter.
I also liked the disc brakes and the rigid fork. I am not sure if the flattened Alesa rims are any good but they looked cool. I know the frame is not steel but it is practically impossible to find good steel bikes in bike shops nowadays. Sweet looking bike but it looks like it's a Europe only model, hence why none of us US people have tried one. I'll gladly give my opinion if you can ship one over :)

Bicycling magazine did a brief write-up on that bike in their 2005 Buyer's Guide issue. I don't think it's a Europe only model. As I recall the write-up started out with a "woo-hoo" kind of statement about Scott returning to the US market.
In the write-up they said it's a great bike with a very specific purpose; that being fast commuting and city riding. They thought it was a little quirky in that it was really a rugged mountian bike with a riding position geared toward fast pavement riding. They really loved it though. In fact they labeled it with their "Lust" tag, which they reserved for a few bikes in the magazine that they were drooling over. The reason I remember this so well is because I was thinking it would make a sweet commuter too and I may have even done a little drooling myself. |

Scoot pulled out of the US market a few years back and has only recently started getting their full linup into some shops.

can i ask why you just wouldn't "step up" to a cyclocross bike???
it would be plenty rugged to handle commuting but with bigger wheels and skinnier tires i bet you could go even faster than with a super fast mtb! |

Of course if I have to to I would commute on a beach cruiser with bent rims but there are a number of features that make the Sub 10 a commuting dream - (1) it is very light- not much heavier than a racing or cyclocross bike (2) it has disc brakes and these come in very handy when it hits the fan in traffic (3) it doesnīt have drop bars (I hate using drop bars in traffic) (4) the 26 inch wheels reduce the revolving mass and are stronger than 700c wheels (5) it comes as standard with slick tyres |

GO FOR IT! i read the bicycling review as well and they seemed to praise it as much as you could in a 4 sentence blurb (the main reason i hate bicycling magazine is no review is ever more than 4 sentences). i myslef like bigger wheels but i am a bigger guy and am not quite sold on disks for commuting.... but for you, it sounds perfect! |
I talked to some folks at REI today and this bike is pretty hot. They claim that this Scott goes out the front door almost as fast as they can put it out on the floor.
I also would like to try out the Diamondback Insight hybrid that has the 8-speed hub with chain drive. They did have two of these bikes in stock, but I ran out of time for a test ride! |
I'm riding a 2008 Scott SUB 30 these days. This was a pawn shop buy for $220.
Comfortable, great climber, quick enough and a lot of fun. It's not steel, but seems to be built to be just about bullet proof. Added Panaracer RiBMo tires this week, and totally love it. |
The Diamondback Haanjo and Novara Zealo are worth looking up when you stop by at REI.

I ran a 2006 Sub 20 for a couple of years. It was a good bike.

I had a Scott sub 20 back in 2006 (less than a year after this OP). It was a good bike, i had an XL frame with 26" wheels and I kinda miss it. so rigid, so much good feedback. I sold it for a crosscheck (didn't everyone???) in 2008 and rode that until last week when i sold it to upgrade my LHT with an xtracycle FR. I consider the scott to be the one that got away. |
i have a 2011 scott SUB 10, this was before they switched to the gates belt drive that the current year models of the bike have, so my bike has a conventional chain w/ alfine 8 and hydraulic disc brakes. overall the bike is ok, but the EBB sucks.
the EBB (external clamp style) on it has been nothing short of a never ending headache. it just absolutely refuses to stay put, slipping out of position after a couple hundred miles or so. i'm at the breaking point right now. i'm going to get rid of it and buy a new bike, but my wife and i are right in the middle of having out 1st baby and buying a new home as well, so there are much, MUCH bigger fish to fry at the moment. for now my Scott SUB 10 soldiers on as my foul-weather commuter, slipping EBB and all. i really pray for nice weather these days cuz it means i can leave my Scott at home and commute on my road bike. |
