Funny. Damn, if they did that in Mpls that bike would be gone in 60 seconds.

Love it! I want to see NYC vs SF. Also, there should be an NCAA division between various college campuses!

Finally, something UCSB could do well in...

I'll be the sinnic here.

I thought this was foolish and did not prove anything. You leave something unattended in any city for any length of time someone is going to grab it.

Also I think it depends on where you leave it in Minneapolis. Loring Park or Nicollet Mall gone but I bet if left downtown Minneapolis say in front of the US Bank building it does not get stolen.

I would love to see the bikes actually locked up with a cheap cable lock. That way you get a better sample of real bike thieft compared to "some moron just left a really nice unlocked bike here".

I don't think it was really meant to prove anything. It was just humor.

That said, you'll notice from the video that most people won't steal an unattended bike. Those who do should be mocked.

I saw a show on one of the pseudo-science channels recently where they had hidden cameras watching to see how long it would take for someone to pick up a wallet left on the ground. It went quickly, of course. The really fascinating thing was that when they did it again but this time painted a red circle around the wallet no one even looked at it.

I agree that it would be fun to see this repeated with various types of locks.

It's quite surprising actually that the bike lasted for more than an hour in each city. But an unlocked, nice shiny bike leaned up against a tree in a busy place really smells like a trap. I agree, an easily-defeated lock would have made things more interesting.

I have a hard time figuring out who'd win, though (or lose, depending on how you view it). I know that bike theft is a big problem in SF, but not sure if it's any worse than NYC...

I would have preferred a larger explosion that coated the guy's head and clothing. No harm, just a bit more embarrassment. Maybe bright pink powder.

Meh.

I'd rather they be hogtied to a lamp post and flogged.
