Can anyone recommend a decent under helmet rain hood?

I have a cycling rain jacket, that doesn't have a hood. I'm planning on wearing a hood on and off my bike, like when I'm working outside. Preferably one that doesn't look like a granny rain hood. Does anyone have recommendations?

One that works, yes I have a suggestion.

@gregjones. That was also my idea, or a shower cap.

A wetsuit hood, could that work?

Nope unless you're riding in antartica i have 2 of them in different thickness and both are way too warm for anything above -30F.
I also have a neoprene hat that works well. The only problem though is that your own sweat has nowhere to go so you end up being wet from your own sweat instead of the rain. Reason why it's better to use this for cold weather rather than for rain.

I wear a moisture-wicking cycling cap w/ visor under my helmet. The visor helps reduce the amount of rain falling onto my cycling glasses. The wicking helps manage the sweat as well as prevent the cap from getting waterlogged. The cap is very similar to this one:

Um, no. What does granny wear? I use a J and G helmet cover, bright yellow and waterproof. Works well. Just tighten the collar on your jacket so water does not get in. My showers pass jacket has a removable hood, start there.

That's what I use. My rain jackets are both the same brand and one velcro attached hood fits both. But I only wear it off the bike. I use a helmet cover from fall until spring. Blocks all the vent holes. It's all I need on cool days and on cold days I can get buy with less in the line of insulating caps.

I had seen a peaked cap from a outdoor clothing manufacturer such as Marmot or Outdoor Research that was waterproof but I can't find it, it might be geared more toward summer use. However, Sealskinz has a waterproof cap that you could wear under your helmet. If you have a roadie helmet (ie., no visor), this hat could provide the visor on rainy days.

I just wear either a skull cap with vented top in 50F or warmer, wool cap with ear cover in 30F to 49F and balaclava under the wool cap in 30F or colder. I don't worry about a rain hood. The jacket I got at REI does have a hood as an extra item but didn't buy it since I don't really miss it. If it rains really hard, then you're getting wet anyway. A hood won't change that very much, IMO. Maybe your jacket manufacturer has a hood to go with it?

I can't use a helmet cover or hood because I use helmet lights, so I bought a Bern helmet for rainy and cold days. The Bern has only a few vents, and I have stayed plenty dry and warm here in Seattle, at least. When it gets *really* cold I can add a thin cloth helmet liner. I see a lot of Bern and similar Nutcase helmets here, so a lot of people have come to the same conclusion I did!

The Bern comes with a small visor as well, if you like that sort of thing. I ride with a fairly aggressive drop at the handlebars though, and I had to remove it because it blocked my view.

Nobody is addressing the OP's question. He wants a rain hood (I gather) so he can both work outside and ride without having to change them (probably while outside and all is wet).

I don't have the answer. He could try REI, an army-navy store or if he lives near Portland, OR, Andy & Bax. Perhaps hunting and fishing outfits.

I think Shower's Pass has one that should work well. It's specifically designed for under helmet use.

Helmet cover, over the helmet, then put on a hat, when you take your helmet off..

I use a Cycle rain cape and a Fisherman's Sou'wester hat. or if not raining Much hooded parka with a cap under it ..

Working all day outside neoprene Grundens is great its not Breathable at all though .

Hauling a hundred crab pots in and out of the sea is a Wet Job anyhow.

What I did was bought a 5 dollar poncho with a drawstring hood and cut the poncho at the shoulders, so I can wear it underneath the jacket and just zip the jacket up high. Since I can tighten the hood, it won't obstruct my vision. I can work outside like that, but if I decide it's too hot n sweaty riding like that, I might just wear a large shower cap over the helmet for commuting...might look dorky but who cares.

Showers Pass. It's designed to fit their jackets but should fit others as well if you add some Velcro tabs, which is how it attaches.

YMMV but I don't seem to mind my own sweat nearly as much as I mind rain. I'm good with a plastic bag under my helmet and one on each foot in crazy downpours. I used to have helmet liner beanies from Nashbar, and they were fine. I've lost both. I would use a helmet cover if it had a mounting for a headlight. Are there any that do? I have also used shower caps and they fit even over helmets with visors like mine. They get holes in them at the drop of a hat, however. I doubt in this day and age of cheap imports that anyone is bringing quality shower caps to box stores. All I can find are the 2pack/$0.99 stuff and they just don't last. And the pastel colors... you better be either female or very secure with your metrosexuality.

Most cloth based rain hoods won't likely work well under a helmet as the material will get pushed and pulled and likely loose its ability to prevent you from getting wet. The material needs to be fairly loose to work. The exception would be neoprene or some types of rubberized coatings.

I don't wear a helmet for daily cycling, only for racing. So for daily bicycling I have a Columbia jacket that's my go-to on warmer rainy days, a Stone Island for slightly cool (eg, above maybe 50f) and a Fjällräven for slightly cooler than that and then it's back to a Columbia ski jacket for below freezing. All work quite well.

For wet racing I have a couple of hooded jackets but always wear the hood over my helmet.

Showers Pass has a cap like my Portland jacket is made from , as usual at under 35 you may have a smaller head and waist line
so it will fit better

I used to have a Gore Tex-like cycle cap .. you can buy the fabric, get a pattern off the internet, and have someone sew one.

Incidentally, does anyone know where I can find the Novara compatible hood? I have the Novara rain jacket but can't find the hood anywhere online.
