Going through withdrawal

It might be a slow week here on the commuting forum with people going on vacation, but is there anyone going through withdrawal already from not riding?

Personally I'm okay with it. The only thing I'm concerned about is the loss of momentum that I've built up, especially if there some nasty weather in store come January 4.

All right, carry on.

Being off the bike for 1-2 weeks isn't a problem for me.. Working out and exercising is part of my lifestyle and I don't need to ride to keep in shape...Tomorrow I will be riding my bike from Mississauga to Halton Hills to visit family and stay there until new years and then ride back home. Other then that I won't be doing much riding over the holidays, but I will still be exercising in different ways...As far as nasty weather is concerned, I have serious doubts about real winter weather coming our way this year, this winter looks to be unusually warm and mild.

@wolfchild: I hope you're right about the weather. Last year I had all the momentum going into the January and then the cold snap hit and I didn't ride for two months. It's hard to get yourself up to brave -20 wind chills. Even on days when I would have ridden in December I skipped.

When I'm not riding I run, so I won't be doing nothing, and the strength training doesn't take a break either.

Cycling movies, cycling books, winter project bikes. When I can't ride... they help with the withdrawal. The movies also inspire me to ride my trainer. And riding the trainer inspires me to brave the cold.

And I tell myself (over and over) winter passes.

I’m leaving tomorrow to visit relatives in Michigan, a one day drive. Originally, my whole immediate family was going to drive together, with no room for a bike. However, it turns out I’ll have to leave later, and drive by myself, so I will take my carbon fiber bike, since the weather looks propitious out there. My alternative was to borrow my brother’s heavy duty “comfort” bike.

Finally I’ll have some time to ride.

How come you're not riding? I'm a weather wimp, but I rode today.

It's raining and 4*C in York Region where I am. With these conditions I prefer not to be out there if I can avoid it. If I had to commute to work, it'd be a different story.

I don't mind a few "rest days" once in a while. A week ago I rode in the rain nearly every day of the week

I'll be loading up the cargo trailer with Christmas gifts in a couple of days

@mcours2006.

I started a similar thread about that last year.

https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/...ithdrawal.html

That weather isn't pleasant to ride in, it may be the worst I I think.

Maybe make up some errands that you need to do and make yourself do them via cycle.

You couldn't possibly.

I could have gone out, but I ran today instead. Running in the rain is more enjoyable than riding.

Yeah, but you're on Mars, aren't you? The nights are pretty chilly, I bet.

>>>...is there anyone going through withdrawal already from not riding?<<<<

YES!!!!! And, like a jerk, i put my bike away just before we experienced 2-3 weeks of record-breaking warm temps here in NY...and then I couldn't get myself to take it out again!!!! I could have had a lot of extra time on the saddle this year, but I blew it.

Anyway, I am already counting the days until commuting by bike becomes routine again.

What? nearly every day? It's only rained hear once since Thanksgiving... but I'm waiting for it to stop. I'm expecting wet snow on the way home... so at least that's different. It has been a damn wet fall in Western Washington. I ride in the rain and the riding doesn't bother me... it's just the constant on-and-off with the clothes, the layers, etc... it's time consuming.

The only thing I dislike is that I don't have anywhere to hang my rain gear at work other than on my bike which is parked in a protected outdoor location. Not exactly my favorite thing to put on cold, wet rain gear at the end of the day. On a positive note, its quickly forgotten as I'm climbing James.

Just think, we're already 1/3 of the way through the rain, and its only 6 more months before it stops.

Whoa whoa... riding in the rain is an absolute pleasure, especially if its little cool (read, average pacific northwest day).

I would ride in the rain over running in the rain any day.

Having some withdrawals here. I haven't cycled much at all in December, even with the mild weather. I miss the cycling. I really enjoyed biking out to places at lunch. I've been driving the car for the past few weeks and it's not as much fun.

If I could have the road all to myself, like on a MUP or something, and it was warmer, then yes, totally fun. But having to deal with cars and the spray, not so much.

Plus, having fallen recently on wet pavement, I'm still a bit tentative about taking corners.

I hear ya. I see you're from TO, and I quit winter riding there after too many wipe outs on Yonge St. or UofT campus..
Now in Vancouver, one definite advantage is the mild wet weather.. but the worry about wet corners, especially worsened by leaves, still makes the ride higher risk.
