My commute was uneventful until the very end, and then this happened. Still kinda rattled.
|
Hrmm. OK, I've decided I am trying the nuclear option to combat fogging. I've got a 3/4 motorcycle helmet that looks roughly like the image below, can't believe I never thought to try it before. Should solve the fogging issue, and be nice and toasty :) Expected to be about 10F for the morning commute tomorrow. I'm excited

I finally solved most of my fogging/icing problems by switching to ski goggles. Still happens, but only when the temp is well below zero and usually doesn't get bad enough to cause me issues before I get to work. |

I'll be curious how this works out for you. When I had a full-faced motorcycle helmet (on my motorcycle, not bicycle ) I would frequently have trouble with it fogging up in cold weather (sub 30°F.) However the 3/4 may have enough ventilation at the bottom to prevent it. If it doesn't work, it will be because the steam and moisture from your breath moves upward and has nowhere to go but the backside of the shield in front of your eyes.

Windy! And it's a crosswind so I'll get it again going home. The temp was a decent 37F but 28F with the windchill... windchill, that thing again!

That's a good idea.. i bought a pair, they make a huge difference..you can even toss a couple of the chemical heat pouches in if you want to.. your hands will stay very toasty.
arsprod and heywood, thank you for your replies and for the link. I'll look into it, even though I'm more a DIY type of person. Abe Froman, I concur with Tundra Man and I'm very curious about how the 3/4 motorcycle helmet works out for you. Keep us posted. ;) Anyway, no commute for me, today. But yesterday, waiting for a traffic light, a car driver rolled his window down and yelled at me "Turn off your high beams!", referring to my two main headlights (nicknamed "Fire Balls" for a reason). Obviously he was joking, or so I thought. Stats 2016 ------------------- Commute ratio (December): [13/31] Near Misses: 0 Idiots met: 0 SCR score for yesterday's commute: - AM: 16+0-0 = 16 - PM: 16+0-0 = 16 SCR total score for 2016: 13 |
Cold in KC. 20's this morning. Loving the Schwinn Letour with 32cc tires. Steel is mellow, the fatter tires (Vitoria Randonuer) have reflective side walls, which allows me to delude myself that I am being seen.
|
Cold, but I'm getting used to it again. A full moon in a slightly cloudy sky, it was pretty bright out there. The deer were on the move, I heard several crashing around in the woods, saw three running alongside me through the front yards of the houses I was passing.
Wasn't there supposed to be a meteor shower? I didn't see any. Too bright. |
Below 20 this morning.. Not really a big deal now. Waiting for the sub-zero temps and see if I can handle it. Carried a couple textbooks this morning, quite the workout. Left a hour earlier so a very peaceful commute. Amazing the how the number of idiots quadruples in just a hour.

A little drizzle for the ride home last night, but nothing bad.
About 41F this morning and some light fog, until the last mile or so where it was really thick. Other poster's recent photos have re-inspired me to keep an eye out for photo ops again. If you look close you can see some birds on a wire watching the sunrise. |
17F as I left the house this morning. Temp was about the same as yesterday and I was dressed the same, but I felt a little colder today for some reason. Not bad though. The combination of moon/clouds in the sky made for a really pretty commute.

3... degrees... Last night's ride home took forever, we ended up with 4-6" of snow and while most of the roads and paths were cleared it was slow going. This morning all was clear but when they clear the MUP they inevitably create rutted ice - thank you schwalbe marathon winter tires. No problems other than ssssllllloooooowwwwww

mgw4jc. Those are some happy birds. Nice photo. Snowy here today, we got an unexpected snow day for the little man today. So he hung out with the grandparents and I went to the ER for an infection and the wife and daughter went to work/daycare. |
10F and sunny today. I think I really need to invest in some chemical toe warmers for my right foot...definitely some mild circulation issues.
On the fogging front: I chickened out on the motorcycle helmet and just cut a more substantial breathing hole in my balaclava..didn't make much difference. It appears my head got bigger over the last 10 years. :foo: Helmet is definitely on the small side. Seeing as how the goggles absolutely are not working out, I'll give the helmet a try. Then I'm moving onto the DIY respirator. :p |

Was a nice morning at 39F and no wind. I took some extra time to clean up the bike a bit. Still had some road grime from the rain last week. I also cleaned, lubed and reinstalled the BB. But its now creaking again. Yeeay... Its one of these:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...TL._SL500_.jpg Maybe I also need to put some grease on the sleeve ends. I think that's about the only place that I didn't put some white lithium greas on... |

I think it may just be time to replace it though. I think I need to find a vise to get the darn thing out though....couldn't do it with just an adjustable wrench and the BB puller. |
My bb also creaking this week. May be some wiggle in cranks, argh.
30F, gray, bone dry. |
It was a pleasant ride this morning. Since it's winter and we talk about weather, today is a weird one, it's going to be in the fifties all day. The roads were wet from the dew.
Five gates open at Nimbus dam, which means Folsom dam is dumping. They went over their 60% limit thanks to rain the last couple weeks. In order to maintain surge capacity for flood control, they have to waste water we'll wish we still had next summer. |
Back in the saddle today after two days of driving due to rain and appointments that required a car. Beautiful weather today with temps in the 40s and clear skies, before the big freeze moves in tomorrow. Highs are only supposed to be the low the 30s on Thursday and Friday here, with lows in the teens. I plan to ride as I don't mind the cold but the wind could be a challenge.

Well, I hit my goal: 200 consecutive bicycle work commutes. Woohoo!
Temp was 8°F when I left the house, which was the projected high for the day. Head wind was blowing pretty good which put the wind chill well below zero. Thankfully it's not supposed to change directions until tomorrow morning so I should get a push home which will help as the air temps drop. Now I've got to ride 5 more times to hit 205. I'm off work starting on the 22nd through the end of the year. If I can make it to 205 I'll only have driven to work 3 times in the last year (the last time being Feb. 5th.) Might get tough. We're supposed to get a good dumping of snow starting tomorrow, then by Sunday the actual air temp is projected to drop to -22°F. |
Darth Lefty. That's what I thought, my wife hates how I understate my problems. Such as once we had a fight early in our relationship. I left, went home and went to a rugby match. I called her that afternoon and asked her to come over, stating that I hurt myself. I had blown out my ACL.
Anywho here is my ride this morning and some pictures. My morning rides are now about 600 meters. https://goo.gl/photos/7Gfn9dE1vqQ8WCg38 https://www.strava.com/activities/80...S&v=1481730543 |
Pretty good commute this morning (my third day commuting!). I think I may have overdone it so far though - my right knee has a spot of tendinitis going. Oh well. Commuting is already my favorite part of the day so I'll just work through it.
Weather wise - it's going to get cold this friday in Boston, meaning I'm gonna test out how well my bar mitts work. |
Last night's rides went nicely. I broke the way home into two rides.
Disappointed this picture didn't turn out so well. I'm still not cold. Among the refinements I need to make to winter riding: I have to figure out how to peel layers off conveniently. I got hot, but I didn't want to stop. https://ridewithgps.com/photos/2164193/large.jpg |

wphamilton The weird thing is that I don't really notice it while riding or walking, it's only really noticeable when I do a squat i.e. standing up and sitting down. I had an experience similar to yours with my back last summer (the perils of being tall...) but I'd really hate to go back to the bus and add 25 minutes back to my commute.
|
Tendonitis sucks. I think I am prone to it...or just have a habit of overdoing things. Probably both. I've had it in both knees from biking, elbow, shoulder from grappling. No fun, and yea when it gets bad, takes FOREVER to go away completely.

You didn't ask but I've been there, when I started off car-free. It it doesn't feel better within one or two days, don't work through it. I did that, figuring it was just another twinge that would work itself out with exercise, but it got worse and suddenly. It took a couple of months to get back to 100%, pedaling with one leg and soft-pedaling on the other. It's better to back off before that point, if there's any choice. At the very least go half-speed and don't stress that leg until the pain is gone.

I've been at my job for a bit over a year. Today was the first day I rode to work.
I actually chose this day because I thought it was going to be a quiet one, including with my boss away. But then I pass my boss in the corridor while walking to my desk with helmet in hand and he said "oh, do you ride to work?" Me - "I did today" Boss - "That's impressive" Me - "Thanks" (with big smile) Looking forward to the ride home now. |
